Exclamation WoW.. The STS-V's rear gear total value in 1st gear is sweeeet..

I was thinking of how much quicker the STS-V could be in the 1/4 mile if it had the CTS-V's 3.73:1 rear gear ratio. Although, when comparing transmission values along with rear gear values. It would appear that STS-V's total combined value is not that bad at all, and is actually quite good.. The STS-V's automatic transmission has a super low 1st gear ("similar" to what is found in a SMG equipted BMW M3). It would appear to me that 1st gear should be the STS-V's strongest.

The STS-V transmission values along with 3.23:1 rear gearing.

    *1st Gear Ratio 4.027
    2nd Gear Ratio 2.364
    3rd Gear Ratio 1.532
    4th Gear Ratio 1.152
    5th Gear Ratio 0.852
    6th Gear Ratio 0.667
    Reverse Ratio 3.064

The CTS-V transmission values along with 3.73:1 rear gearing.

    *1st-2.97:1
    2nd-2.07:1
    3rd-1.43:1
    4th-1.00:1
    5th-0.84:1
    6th-0.56:1
    Reverse 3.28:1

Ya, to be honest I wish 1st was longer. I suppose 1st might be useful for coming off a tight hairpin on a road course when you're really winding it out and playing "Schumacher going for pole at Monaco," but for everyday driving, even "fast" street driving, its not a very logical ratio.

During everyday driving, the combination of low first gear, agressive (nonlinear) throttle tip-in on the curve for the electronic throttle, and summer tires in cool weather make smooth starts a bit dicey.

I'd use manual mode and second gear starts, but, as I've posted previously, the fact that the shift pattern is opposite of a sequential gearbox race car makes manual mode too weird for me.

2nd gear starts might be ideal, it was with my '02 Firehawk with 6sp manual and a 4.10 rear gear. 4.10's made it fun to drive and easy to do smokey 1st gear then power shift to 2nd while maintaining or even increasing the smoke(god, I loved that car!), but 2nd gear was the way to get consistent 1/4 mile starts. But, a super low 1st with a linear throttle, which we don't have, makes it easier to control your launch upto break away.

Electronic throttles give the engineers lots to play with, but I'm not totally thrilled with the results. My prior car, a BMW 750, had an Economy mode and a Sport mode. Unlike the STS, switching between modes meant switching to completely different throttle maps. Great idea, but Ecomony was nonlinear in a very lazy way while Sport was pretty much identical to the STS-V--aggressively nonlinear. I'd like to have just a "normal" mode!

1st gear is not really an issue. The TQ nannies take care of that for you. Somehting I hadn't realized before dyno'ing my V is that it is impossible to do sustained burnouts, even power breaking it. Because the same reason you can't dyno our cars (front wheels not rotating) ABS kicks in in the rear. Even turning off the TC and Stabilitrac doesn't do the trick. Don't get me wrong you can do an O.K. burn out but you can't hold a burnout and roast the tires. To use 1st gear for generous tire spinning, you would have to disconnect your front speed sensors.

Is the gearing trans/rearend the same in a regular STS v8 1SG?
