Slipping transmission?

Remove this ad
Over the last couple of days, I have found my transmission slipping ... meaning that when I press on the gas from a stop, I hear the engine RPMs increase without any immediate power to the wheels. Then a second later it lurches forward. Anyone else experience this?

Re: Slipping transmission?

Not to any large degree. I have felt some minor slop once or twice.

Re: Slipping transmission?

None here. The tranny isn't as responsive as I'd like when trying to get it to downshift, but I that's just the computer, not slipping.

If it's easily reproduced you should probably get it into the dealer for a look.

It could be the tranny slipping, the torque converter failing as it seems like it isn't locking up or it could need a computer update from GM. With today's computer technology in cars, it could be a simple computer update through GM TIS.

Take it into the dealer and see what they can find.

Re: Slipping transmission?

It's not traction control or the stabiltiy is it? I had it happen to me a few times only to look down and see the stability light on, then I realized my rear wheels had hopped around going around a bumpy corner.

Just a thought. Other than that, my trans shifts great.

I haven't messed with the stability or traction control, but there are no indicator lights illuminated on the dash either. I guess I just need to take my list and take it in. I just hate taking it in....

Re: Slipping transmission?

Well, I got a call today. They can't replicate the slipping. I might have guess I would get that response. How can you get an intermittent problem fixed unless it happens at the exact moment they take it for a test drive?

Yep...I have...but it was my own fault. I flushed the tranny fluid out and replaced it with Amsoil fluid and our flush machine does not fill it all the way. It was 3 weeks before I noticed it but it ended up being 3/4 qt low which made it slip in 1st and 2nd gears under hard accel. We added the proper amount of fluid and it is fine now.

So...whether you have had a flush or not have the fluid level checked...just so you know...you can't check it, they have to because the transmission is sealed.

Well, they still have the car so I can tell them to check that. Is is worth changing to Amsoil? If so, do most dealers carry it and what should they charge?

Thanks

No, and no. And if they did, probably about $295.00.

You are not alone. Mine surges at 60mph in 6th gear when I totally let off the gas. Vector tune improved it quite a bit but the tranny is a sluggish POS. I reverted to manually shift to compensate.

Most dealers won't carry it, though you can easily order it online and hand it to your dealer.

This is the fluid the STS-V tranny uses:
AMSOIL ATF
... which incidently is the same fluid I've been using in my 2002 Corvette Z06 on the track since the 2004 season (no failures) and will be putting in my 06 CTS-V next weekend.

I just hit 5k miles so it is time to put some Amsoil in the Tranny.

Re: Slipping transmission?

CadV,

Let me know if it makes a difference. They're going to check the fluid level and road test it again tomorrow, so I don't know if its just going to be one of those things I have to live with if they can't duplicate it so if you think the Amsoil makes it run better, I'd give it a try.
