    Re: Rear differential leak again

I just spoke with a Cadillac Service Rep this afternoon regarding the differential leak.
He said that it's the pinion seal & that it's a common problem w/CTS, SRX & STS models.
Will have mine checked out when I bring it in next time.

This rear is shared among a variety of GM vehicles, and they all report problems.

What do you want for $50 or $60k? You should have bought a real Cadillac, a Fleecewood Brougham.

Sorry about the rear end problems. I just bought a CTS, and I need to climb underneath it to look for such problems.

The entire rear differential had to be replaced in my 2005 STS a few weeks ago. Ever since, my car whines during acceleration and deceleration. Is this normal?

    Re: Rear differential leak again

Just got my STS back from the Cadillac dealership for repairs.
They replaced the pinion seal & differential oil.
    Hope it does the trick.
    We'll see.

Is this a big issue ? ... I mean can I just leave it ?

I find some oil from time to time under my car... but it's a little...

What problems I can get if I leave it?... I don't want those non-educated mechanics at the dealer play with it...

    Re: Rear differential leak again

There is the possibility of differential gear "whine" if the fluid level gets low.
That was the case for my STS according to the service rep.
I would get it checked out & repaired.

    2006 STS V6
I had the differential leaks repaired two times, and then they replaced the differential. It leaked once more and they replaced a “gasket.” I’ve got 15,000 miles and it hasn’t leaked in the past 8,000 miles.

So is it the gasket, not the pinion seal ?

The rear ends in STS and CTS automobiles are very similar in design but are not identical. http://www.getrag.de/307.1?_search_=..._=0&_offset_=0

This is an example of superior German products.

    Re: Rear differential leak again

Mine started leaking with 1000 miles and got the dealer to replace pinion seals and blowhole seal. My ctsv leaked also but not near as much. Its irritateing but thats about all. Had a leak spot on my garage floor already anyway.

    Re: Rear differential leak again

For the past 4 months, no leaks, thought was all fixed after dealer put in "vent tube" in rear diff. Pulled car out yesterday, and again, oil on floor. Will eventually go back to dealer for 4th time. Guess I get to drive a loaner again... which one shall I choose this time??? Really a sad situation... if I didn't love car so much, would be screaming lemon.

    Re: Rear differential leak again

GM service mgr tells me that they have a GM additive that will resolve the leaking problem?????

Try a large Caddy dealer for verification of this info. My guy is pretty sharp and has been there for 20 yrs.

I dont know about an additive, but I know for the XLR GM has been swapping the fluid for a synthetic. That, however, is for resolving gear noise, not leaks.

    Re: Rear differential leak again

I was going to purchase a used 2005 STS with like 40K miles.. Should I avoid purchasing one? How much money are we talking for a repair if the car is out of warranty? By 40 or 50 thousand miles, do you suspect that the problem should have been fixed?
