    Lightbulb DVD Question?

I've only had my STS for a couple weeks and am not up to speed on the Nav part of it. I did notice this morning while taking some back roads home and out in the boondocks I crossed a pretty good size river and it wasn't even shown on the map. Is there a way to tell if what you would like to see showing on the map all the time like some of the mapping programs that you can buy for your home computer?

    Re: DVD Question?

Another question, my wife had a Honda Odessey van with nav and when you touched the middle of the screen it would read out other info as in gps speed, altitude, etc. I would like to see the gps speed and altitude being read out while driving. There are times when you spend hours and hours going somewhere and don't need the step by step directions all the time or need to look at the map so that would be nice to see other options.

Maybe your map was zoomed out too far? The detail is lessened as the scale grows. I keep mine at 1/2 mile.
As to your other question, I don't think those other touch screen options are available.

    Re: DVD Question?

I have mine set to 1/16 I believe so a lot closer than 1/2 mile so should show up but will try it at 1/2 mile to see if that is the problem, or it feels that because I'm out in the boondocks I don't need to know where a river is which I don't but was amazed that it didn't show up even though my $49 Delorme Street Atlas program shows much more than the STS ever thought of showing. Dollar for Dollar the STS mapping program is more like a buck fifty nine but since it was free so to speak with the Nav. rebate I guess I can't complain to much. Only reason I really bought it was for the Bose that can't be gotten alone.

    Re: DVD Question?

Different manufacturers set-up their systems differently for both competitive and customer issues. The map datum themselves are nearly identical in raw form as there is only two vendors that supply it to all the manufacturers.

In this case it is a DENSO unit, set-up to GM specs, and running NavTech source maps. GM and/or Denso could have made the decision to reduce the amount of extraneous information the display shows to reduce clutter/confusion.

Delorme also produces Topo maps and so is more likely to include extra data just like the Garman and Megellan units due as it can be used for hiking as well as street routing.

    Re: DVD Question?

I was driving along in Montana using my Delorme GPS mapping system with a PALM IIIc and kept seeing railroad tracks on the map for 50 miles. There were no tracks to be seen out the windows. I finally realized there was an abandoned RR roadbed with some old rotten ties where a RR track had been about 40 years ago. It's seems they all have problems with reality and progress.
