    Re: Does anyone use ethanol?

    BAT CRAP !!!

Over 80% of the U.S. automobile population is forced to use E10 blended fuels. Emissions regulations. Every U.S. destined automobile gasoline engine made since the phase-out of MTBE is E10 certified. METHANOL is the rubber and seal eater - ethanol (grain alcohol - you drink it) is fairly benign in a 10% concentration, as well as being an incredible fuel system cleaner.

FWIW, Methanol is a component of many fuel system snake oils.

Here's a website that allows you to find "pure gas" around the U.S. and Canada - in regions that allow it. You'll notice that that a lot of the central U.S. allows the sale of "pure" gasoline - they're exempted from the EPA rules, so the other emissions compliant states "feed you clean air". Hah !!!

Where there's ethanol there is water. Aurora if you have the option of keeping away from it, do so.

    Re: Does anyone use ethanol?

Ethanol is a problem in boat fuels and other setups where usage is low and the engine may sit for weeks at a time. The gasoline absorbs moisture from heated/cooled tank vent air and if the absorption is significant, it can lead to dissociation of the water/ethanol in the bottom of the tank.

For almost any car, driven 4,500 - 15,000 miles a year, ethanol is a non-problem.

Nothing but E10 locally since I started driving. So 10+ years. I don't have a friend or family member who's had any fuel system related issues in that time period, other than my mother scraping a hole in her tank.

Well I will say it sucks for people with older cars. My CDV sits in a garage and gets maybe 1k miles a year.

Even environmentalists are coming to realize what a poor idea this stuff is. I'm with Guy. Avoid it if you can.

    Good luck.

If the greenies are dissing the stuff, the EPA loves the stuff, car owners hate the stuff, and the Corn Lobby makes megabucks off the stuff - and financially supports the Administration, who will win ?

I wonder, is E10 more expensive over regular gasoline in the US? We don't get it in The Netherlands, but can get it in Germany for cheaper then regular gasoline.

Also, can it do any harm to a 2001 seville STS? (Not meaning to hijack but just wondering)

    Re: Does anyone use ethanol?

Until they find a better source than corn, ethanol remains a method of burning food as fuel. Before government subsidies, it is far more expensive than gas for several reasons. Its production consumes large amounts of corn and fresh water; good for corn farmers but not good for the poor and hungry. It cannot be transported via pipeline, so count on burning a lot more diesel fuel to bring ethanol to your local retailer.

It also contains less energy than gas, so if you get 20 MPG on 87 octane E10 expect about 15 MPG on E85. Your engine will run hotter & you should expect to change your oil more often (due to water contamination.) While ethanol CAN burn clean, modern auto/truck/cycle engines already do quite a fine job; smaller outdoor power equipment, not so much....

Umm, no, you're not going to experience a 25% mileage decrease by using E10. Where did you come up with that figure?

Ethanol contains 33% less power potential than gasoline. E10 is 10% ethanol. So E10 will provide ~3.3% less power/economy.

Oill mileage is completely unaffected, and NO, the engine WILL NOT run hotter.

Where do people come up with this stuff??

Well I remember running GASAHOL in a 1968 NINTY-EIGHT, that 455 rocket loved every drop and would complain when you put the regular stuff in it, Pure moonshine!

    Re: Does anyone use ethanol?

You definitely do better on gas mileage without e10.

And there's got to be a reason the manual clearly states that using gasoline with more than 10% ethanol is a no go. It's not because that's better for the car that's for sure.
