power steering non-existant at low rpms, ok at higher rpms. ???

took a 2 hour ride and arrived home fine. next day, power steering is very hard at low rpm but when I raise rpms wheels turn with a bit more effort than normal. I do not have any bad codes, no leaks and no weird noises. power steering fluid is reading where it should be. I have new belts, there is no slipping issues with the pullies. any ideas would be helpful.

Power steering pump is shot. A very common problem.

thanks dkozloski, that was my first guess. is there any way to test the pump?

    ----------

hello Austin. first thing, don't know how to PM on this site. second, here is my vin and mileage: 1G6DW6775011xxxx, 120,821 miles. since you are Cadillac customer care, how common a problem is this? I have read that it is quite common and a fellow cadillacforums user also agrees. has Cadillac modified the pump to eliminate this problem in newer vehicles? thanks for any help you can give me.

ZF is the rack not the pump. Mine failed and I'm ZF.

There is a special service tool called a power steering system analyzer which can be hooked into the system to provide assistance With diagnosis by giving pressure readings.

i had the same problem and I went on a drive about 2.5 hours to the cottage and got there pump would wine at higer rpm like a super charger, hahah and no assist at idle it ended up being the pump had to buy some pittings at the local parts shop to get a gauge in line to read the pressures was more of a pain in the ass than anything. if I was to do it again id just put the pump on they are not that exspencive through nappa if you are cappible of putting the pump on yourself

UPDATE, OK gentlemen, I replaced the power steering pump and car is doing fine. Works as it should. thank you all for your input and drive safe.
PS the bolt behind the bracket for pump was a pain in the butt. my hands are too big to squeeze in and loosen, have a friend with skinny hands take that one out for you if you decide to do it yourself otherwise it was easy.
