Factory Navigation vs portable GPS or phone GPS?

I recently bought a 2008 STS with NAV but the map DVD is missing. I'm wondering if it's worth it ($200 plus shipping) to buy a nav disc or just use iPhone or portable GPS instead. I've never seen the factory nav in action so I don't know how it compares. Aside from the 'built-in' convenience, does it have any advantages over an iPhone or portable GPS? Opinions please.

Without the NAV disc you cannot use the voice recognition or Bluetooth feature, I'd say it's worth getting the disc.

You could get an older disc on eBay. It's nice just to have the map running just to see what streets are coming up if nothing else.

I also like to have it running on trips to tell me how much time is left to the destination. Probably wouldn't run navigation on the phone for that long.

Around here in the winter when it gets to -30F and below the ice crystal fog gets so thick that you can get lost in your own neighborhood. NAV is great for getting home to the right house.

I don't think you can even save your personalized settings without a disk. Somebody around here ought to be able to find an old one for you.

See if there are any forum members in your area. Maybe they could let you use theirs just to get the download done, just a thought.

Re: Factory Navigation vs portable GPS or phone GPS?

I can't imagine not being able to utilize my nav. It's part of the car's experience. With that said, I'm using my smart phone more and more for navigation, particularly on short trips or when I'm in a pinch. Just this weekend, my wife and I were attending a funeral in a town about 30 minutes south of us. We never heard of the funeral home and even if we did, we didn't have a clue where it was located. En route, I simply spoke the name of the funeral home into the phone, clicked on directions, clicked on "start navigation" and I was done.

If I want to quickly look at a nav map, the STS is great for that. Just press the map button, then click agree and presto, you have a map.

As much as I love my STS I actually like the nav system too, but it's just too darn easy to input a destination into a smart phone. Inputting a destination into the STS's nav system is quite archaic. I'm not knocking the nav in the STS, just commenting on my experiences with it. The nav is, what it is.

Also, a kind person on this forum mailed me their old disc after upgrading. I passed the good deed forward and mailed mine to someone in the same situration you are in. Put it out there, ya never know what will happen.

Re: Factory Navigation vs portable GPS or phone GPS?

This whole thread is why I waited and searched for my new(to me) STS
    No Nav.
When new, the nav may be great, but, as time goes on, it loses value.
Perhaps to those who have a hard time finding their shoes, The nav is great, and to those who need help finding the pizza shop 2 miles away, great.
OK you are two states West and need a hotel, fine, nav is great.
But just like the search/seek buttons on the wheel, you are more lost than you can hope.
OK the nice display allows you to set all the settings easier, but, after when set, why?

Nav is for the clueless that deserve to be lost.

    Daddy_o's opinion.

Or it could be for the better sound system, constant user adjustment of the F55 suspension, control of bza and lane departure alerts?

    Lane departure alerts?
Stop "constantly" changing the suspension and you won't need the alert.
Are you driving your car, or is the car driving you?
