Sound system is far superior with the NAV.

    interesting

as I think my 02 had a better sound system than this....sans the DTS audio which is rarely used on my 05...the 02 had better bass response

is the STS with the sport tuned suspension that much better than those that dont have that option?...the only two STS's I have ever driven were a black 1SG and a white diamond 1SG
I bought the white diamond one

I say that because my prior Benz and BMW both drove a LOT better than my STS...and they both had passive suspension systems

I had an 04 Deville Dts and the sound system was excellent but it's inferior to the 15 speaker in the STS in my opinion.

STS with Nav is pretty darn good sounding. Not as good as a home system, but what car is?

The source makes a huge difference.........

    FM radio, good.
    MP3, good.
    CDs, darn good.
Surround sound discs, really good (I have over 30 discs).
XM radio, crappy. But that's XMs extreme compression they use to get so many channels.

That all just IMHO of course.

Agreed except I think fm and xm are a wash. What are these surround sound discs you speak of? Regular CDs you buy that are compatible with surround sound?

    Special DVD-Audio discs.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Audio
It's a dead format and hard to find but sounds amazingly better.
I have 1 DVD-A disc ( 14 Shades of Grey ~ Staind http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00009P1NN/..._NBDjtb0E2J475 ) and it sounds really good in the car and on the home theater system. The disc has a few copies of the same music in different formats in this case in the STS you start playback of "group 4" to get the multichannel audio.

    5.1 surround 24-bit 96KHz audio
Encoded with MLP at 9.6Mbit/s (compared to mp3 typically at 128Kbp/s or 0.128Mbit/s)

Yeah, too bad it's a dead format. It's really awesome. Also DTS CDs are great and they only play in surround sound so you don't have to select the right track.

Amazingly RUSH released some new DVD-A discs in 2011 (of old material remixed to 5.1 surround).

I've gotten all my discs from eBay, Half.com, and Amazon.

Hmmm might have to look for DTS CDs ... Wasn't sure they would work in the STS.

They do. About half mine are those. It's funny if you play them on a regular CD player without a DTS decoder you just hear a hissing sound.

So is the quality of the Dts just as good as the DVD audio?

DTS is max 1.5Mbit/s (1500Kbp/s) at 48KHz at 24 bit depth.
    DVD-A is max 9.6Mbit/s (9600Kbp/s) at 96KHz at 24 bit depth.

So technically not just as good but considering the limited options available it's going to be better than CD/FM/XM/AM can do.

Some would argue that a person wouldn't typically be able to tell the difference between DTS and DVD-A.

Re: Factory Navigation vs portable GPS or phone GPS?

Nice. Well I just bought two DVD-As off amazon. 8701 by usher. Used to listen to this all the time when I was younger. I know it well so it'll be good to hear the difference. Also bought Luther vandross' a house is not a home, Luther being my favorite all time r&b singer. I'm excited for them to come in. Some others I would've bought were way too expensive.

Now to see if there is a wider selection in DTS format.

With the DVD-As our cars don't do a great job keeping the 5 channels discrete in the PPCM format. It sounds good because of the great bandwidth, but I usually switch to the DTS or Dolby Digital tracks that are normally included. More compression, but you can really hear the 5 channels.

Check out the manual about how to get to the different tracks. It usually involves the Search button and sometimes the Audio button. Also for DTS and Dolby Digital press the audio config button (hard key) and make sure Multi-Channel is pressed.

Every disc is a little different in how you put it in the right mode, so I labeled each of my jewel cases with the correct button sequence for surround mode.

With DTS discs you don't have to do anything.
