And keep your eye on the actual oil on the dipstick because the olm doesn't account for leaks, burning oil, or an oil change where the proper amount of oil wasn't put in to begin with.

Does it actually have to be mobile 1? I run Amsoil which is half the price and seems to be growing in popularity. Although I do change my oil 5,000km.

As long as your oil of choice meets or exceeds GM's specs you'll be fine. Oh, have I mentioned to keep an eye on the oil level? Check it at least every other fuel up.

    That's a 1/2 quart overfilled.

Re: First time Cadillac owner. 2005 STS

Congratulations on your purchase. Do check a V-6's oil frequently and use oil of the GM Spec in your owners manual for your engine (or superior).

I always make sure I have at least 8 quarts of Mobil1 and a quality filter in the trunk when I go in to my local shop for a change & tire rotation. In my case, it's roughly an annual ritual. My wife insists on going strictly by the OLM despite the manual's caution about not exceeding a year. I can't say it's hurt anything in her N* for 6 years & 70,000 miles. (It does get regular long trips.)

Well I just changed my oil and checked it after I put 8 quarts in. Perfect amount when I checked the stick. Pretty sure the v8 North Star requires 8.3 quarts. Man what a pricey oil change .. 85 bucks including oil filter ouch :/

8.3? Not at all. The owners manuals used to spec 8 quarts with a filter change, but the PCV system quickly drank the last half quart. Recommended fill is now 7.5 quarts. The "perfect amount" is half way up the hash marks on the dipstick (xxxxxXxxxxx), NOT all the way to the full mark.

Re: First time Cadillac owner. 2005 STS

My owners manual does not state that the correct fill is halfway up the hash marks. It says to maintain the oil level between the hash marks.

Personally, I prefer to have my oil level at the full mark. It rarely varies. The oil level on my wife's car occasionally drops a bit. Over the course of 10,000 miles, it may use half a quart.

Yes, anywhere in the cross hatched area is technically correct. There is a TSB on the issue that states 7.5 quarts is the recommended capacity.

Not sure that tsb applies to the lh2. I know it's for the ld8 and l37 though. When my lh2 is a 1/2-1 qt low the VVT starts to complain. Filling to the top of the hatch quiets it down immensely.

Just checked my oil tonight. Nuts on the middle dot. And yes, I have a flat oil dipstick.
