The whole deal seems fair to me. They will likely "just reduced" the price a bit, then get beaten down a bit on both the CTS and the possible trade in and make at best $2000 profit on the whole deal, which after paying the overhead would put $300 in the owner's pocket.

That said, I've always traded my cars and always get a great deal, in my eyes. But I find it more profitable to give the dealer $500 than to waste my time with a bunch of bozos and tire-kickers.

In their defense, if you came to me and said "Hey, how much would you give me for this Vet?" I would also pull a number out of my a$$. If you were actually serious about doing business with the dealer, I am sure you'd be very close to getting the price you had in mind.
Thanks to all here, you are quite an honest bunch.
I want to add that that the stealer put on two new tires, a new battery, and new discs and pads all around.
Thats at least another $1000-$1400 on their end,
Plus I get the 90 day warranty.
Add it all up, I got a great, slightly used STS, at a good price.

I told them how much I wanted. I was serious about buying a car from them since I bought my CTS-V from them. I was not going to get low balled on my C6. It only had 9,000 mile and in great shape. Looked new.

Don't forget the service department. I suspect those revenues cover the dealership's fixed operating costs and then some. Any profit on car sales, new or used is gravy.

The operative word above is "suspect"; I really don't know. Though no doubt, servicing dollars is a dealership's most steady stream of revenue.

I believe that's what I meant by "service operations" which also, by the way, includes parts sales. You would also be amazed at how much used car operations contribute to the bottom line.

Dealers make plenty of money on new cars, as well. They bag in a lot of manufacturer incentives and other goodies most people have no idea about. Even selling the car at invoice price, which rarely happens, they still make some money. Not to mention that in order for the dealer to get certain number of the new models they must sell certain numbers of the current model.

Dealers overall make the most money on financing, period.

Note the after-market rims. I still have the original 12 spoke.

I would have kept those aftermarket rims most likely. Would have made for a good alternate set for the STS.

those prices at that dealership are VERY "enthusiastic"

It wasn't in the cards. I would have had to put rubber on the old 12 spokes and TPM's.
That wheelset I got from a local NE chain called Town Fair Tire.
I had a cut tire when I bought it and the dealer wanted to only replace one tire.
Daddy-o don't like one tire so I picked these out, package deal costing $1499, including road hazard warranty.
Dealer sent me a check for $229 for one tire. Pretty good deal.
Speed tested to 130 MPH...smoothest ride ever.

they seem to be pricing their cars in the stratosphere
I guess with those prices they can over allow on trade ins so that someone thinks they are getting a great deal
