2005 STS 4.6L NS not starting

Left the office today and stopped to get gas. Car started fine when leaving gas station. Got home and parked in my garage. Came out about an hour later and when I tried to start the car, I heard a click and then actually saw (and smelled) a bit of smoke coming from under the hood. Now when I hit the button to start, I hear a click and then nothing. I haven't checked the battery extensively yet but it is only a few months old and has been fine. I have power to everything and there are no codes. My guess is the starter because it has sounded a bit funny for the last few weeks (a bit rough) and, when I got up close to the manifold, the smell was a little stronger right about where the starter is (under the manifold). I had my son hit the button while I listened closely and the click is definitely coming from where the starter is.

I know I have to remove the manifold to get to it. Anyone have any tips on the removal and replacement of the starter? Looks like I can pick one up at Autozone for around $165.00 so I am going to try to do it myself to save some bucks. Is the manifold a nightmare to get off and back on?

Any thoughts or suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I am not afraid of mechanical work... just want to be sure I know what I am getting into.

I have to try to get this done today so, hopefully, someone that has done this sees this reply and responds. I confirmed the local parts store has the starter and intake gaskets. I looked online and can't find any direct information on replacing the starter. Apparently, there are no PDF's floating around for service and repair on this car.

ANY help or tips on doing this would be greatly appreciated.

I have to say I am surprised at the complete lack of response to this. Apparently, no one has had a starter go out on these. Anyway, I got it done and, for the most part, it wasn't too hard.

Glad you got it fixed. I don't remember reading about anyone else on here having the starter go bad. I'm sure you're not the only one though.

My starter was replaced. Would just get a "click" when I tried to start it. It would start after a few tries. I would've tried to help but the dealer did the work under my extended warranty.

I Believe the starter took a dump today!! Can or does anyone have a link they can post on the R&R of this job for my 05 3.6? I'm sure I can figure it out but I'd like to have a little guidance so I know what to expect. THANKS Everybody!!

I think with the starter being in the valley instead of being externally exposed under the car may make these starters more reliable and GM may have beefed-up the starters because of their location. That might be the reason for a low response, not many have done it.

How about some pointers from you on replacing a starter on a N*?

I did a how-to on replacing the micro switches (the inside housing) for the front door handles with pictures and advise on what to avoid and actually got a few thank yous over the past year or so.

I also asked for help trouble-shooting my reverse sensors and was advised what to look for and how to test. I deduced I needed a new module, replaced it, then gave back by posting-up what I experienced along with a couple of tips.

As time goes on these beloved vehicles will begin needing starters (among many other things due to the complexity of these cars) and the community will be able to refer to your guidance for advice on.
