    Need new Catalytic Convertor

    2006 Cadillac STS - V6 - 85k miles

I recently got the P0430 code - Bank 2 running below threshold.

Also heard the clanking sound associated with a broken cat.

Anyone have any suggestions about the best way to go about fixing this? Should I buy a universal fit online and have a local muffler shop install?

I live in California, so my choices are somewhat limited.

    Thanks.

Part of manifold. Can't use a universal.

There isn't a "universal" fit as the cat and exhaust manifold is one piece. Hook up with Chris over at Rippy Cadillac (site vendor on right banner), he'll get ya good deal on one.

Well, 1BadCad beat me to it...It sucks, I'm in the same boat my friend.

What would this clanking sound like? Any YouTube videos on it?

Sounds like someone shaking a spray paint can. Like a marble in a tin can. It went away for me after a couple days. I believe it's the material in the converter that broke off and bounced around in there until it chipped into enough small pieced to get spit out the tail pipe.

Just called a shop to ask about replacing the cat - they need the "Engine Family Code".

Any idea where i can grab this? Is it the same for all 2006 STS v6's? Anyone have it off hand?

    Engine family code?? There's only TWO engines available for a 2006 STS...the LY7 V6 and the LH2 V8, if LY7 is what they're looking for that's it.

No, they need like an 8 digit value from under the hood or something apparently.

On a side note, is this something I should fix now, or can I wait till I need to get a smog check?

If it isn't impacting performance yet you can drive with it for a while, eventually it could start fouling spark plugs though if it gets too clogged up...I've been driving mine for 20k or so since my CEL first lit up, it comes and goes as it pleases.

Sounds good. I'll just forget about it for the time being.

    Re: Need new Catalytic Convertor

Well, yesterday the car wouldn't rev higher than 2500RPM. Seems like the cat got blocked.

Took it to the dealer this morning - $1135... They did comp me a Tahoe however. They also recommended I replace my spark plugs, which kind of makes sense now. Ill be doing that myself, however.

Can someone confirm the proper gap for the 2006 V6? Is it .043?

    Thanks

Well, that didn't take long to go south, jeez. I feel fortunate I've been able to live with mine dying its slow, painful death for quite some time. I was quoted around the same from my local GM dealer to replace the driver side manifold/cat, I see that I can get the part from Napa for just under $500, and I think Chris @ Rippy Cadillac said he could get close to that price as well. I will be just taking mine to a local exhaust shop to do the swap, no sense in paying outrageous dealer labor rates for something like this.
