05 STS with clicking/popping sound in dash

For a while my STS has had a noise directly in the center of the dash that sounds like a relay or vacuum motor clicking or popping. I saw a couple other old post describing the sound as a 'gurgling' noise. Its there on my car regardless of whether or not the radio or a/c is on and is there nearly all the time. I saw in the other post that some thought it might be a HVAC motor or vent door. Anyone have any luck actually fixing this problem?

That's annoying. I don't see how they couldn't hear it. I have to actually turn up the radio a little to drown it out...

I have the same issue but I found nobody who could resolve it. There's this youtube video of someone with same exact noise who uploaded for some answers but nobody came up with a good answer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXlUsn-Qtew

How would I go about lubing them? Remove the entire dash?

I just found my engine got a knock as I was getting an oil change. The inside dash ticking noise coincides with the engine ticking! Do any of you guys got an engine knock as well? And also I can hear the noise more as I start up the car and it sounds more behind the speedometer rather than middle of the dash board

I used spray able white lithium grease....start on the passenger side, remove the glove box, cycle the ac through different ac modes and temperatures...you'll see the moving parts that will ned the lube....also if you are getting that "farting/groaning" sound, you'll see what's causing it on the passenger side....drivers side is alil more difficult to get to without removing a lot of the dash but you can remove the panel that's below the steering wheel and you'll see them.

Re: 05 STS with clicking/popping sound in dash

There are actuators that control the air doors. They have a layer of resistive material that over time wears off. When it eventually wears through, it can cause them to click, as they move until the worn out part, and then think they need to move back, so they move back, onto the good part, repeating. Sometimes they get lucky and move through it to the intended position, then the clicking stops for awhile. I imagine once it starts to fail, it deteriorates rapidly with all the movement.

Here's a picture of the inside of my failing actuator module. You can see it's worn all the way through in spots:

They are like $40 a piece and kind of a bitch to install (at least my passenger side one was) because it's up inside the dash, I had to do the thing where you sit upside down in the seat, getting too old for that kinda maneuver And there was a screw that was hard to access. I have yet to do the driver's side one so maybe it's easier.

Here's a picture taken looking "up" into the guts behind the dash on the passenger side. You can see the module in the center with the wires going into it.

Anyway, if you hear clicking (I thought mine was the CD drive seeking) that seems to be coming from the dash, this could be the issue. Unfortunately, adding lube on them (even if you could, they are well sealed) wouldn't help at least in my case, you can see they still have a lot of grease, but it's already worn through so replacement is about the only fix.
