Oil Dipstick Markings... Why doesn't anyone know what they mean?

    Hey Guys

Ive done some research on the oil dipstick markings and I cant find anything with a solid answer

    I have a 2006 STS 3.6l

    My dipstick looks like this....

    <XXXXXXX : : : XXXXXXX)

My oil level is directly on the fullest " : " marking... and it has been there ever since I bought the car roughly 3 weeks ago.

I want to make sure it's not too full...

Do the marking represent any certain number of quarts? Like, first marking = 3 quarts.... second marking = 5 quarts.... third marking = 7 quarts.... etc....??????

Or do the markings not represent a certain number of quarts? I just bought the car not too long ago and I am trying to figure out if the car burns any oil, or if it needs any oil added

    V8 is 7.5, V6 is 6 IIRC...

correct level is in the middle of the operating range hash marks...If it's all the way to the top it's too full.

so its right at the third " : " .... isnt that 6 quarts? How is it too full if that is the recommended amount of oil to put in?

curtc's post is true of Northstars. Top of the hash marks is 8 quarts, but GM changed the recommended fill level to 7.5 (middle of hash marks) to reduse oil consumption by the PCV system. Maybe they changed the recommended fill level for the 3.6 as well?
