    Brakes rotor/pad contact area-see pictures

Just the facts- I let a tire shop replace my brakes, today I was washing the car and noticed the rust on the new rotors. It looks like the brake pads are only contacting half the rotor. It is like this on both rear wheels. The pads look to be to small for the calipers, does anyone know if this is the correct contact/ware area for a 2008 STS? The pictures show my reason for concern.P1010815.JPGP1010810.JPG

    You have big brake problems.

Here's my LF after a complete brake change, 300 miles, and a wash job + 10 miles ...............

My 08 also had very small pads on the rear, i think it is 'as designed'... fronts on the other hand are using the full rotor like Sub's

I did just recently replace my rears and they did come with pads that only cover about 50% of the rotor

??? Here's the RR rotor - plenty of swept surface there, too.

The fronts do about 70% or more of the total braking duty - the rears do very little, in the order of things. Thus the smaller rotor/pads and the brake pressure proportioning valve setups at or after the master cylinder.

I'm just imagining someone reading your post and bending down next to their front and rear rims after a drive and spitting on their rotors. Thanks for the laugh. If anyone plans on doing this please have a friend record it.

Duh !!!! No kidding --------- but regardless, the rears do quite a bit less 'work' than the fronts - and, FWD or RWD, the rears get stinking hot when doing an aggressive slowdown from 140+ - trust me. (and read your GM service manual .............)

Looks like they used the wrong rotors. I have replaced my pads and rotors twice (125Kmiles). I have the JE5 brake package with the 17" wheels. On both occasions, the parts house gave me the smaller rotors. There is a 20 mm difference in size of the rotors. I had to go back both Times and get the larger rotors.
