    2005 STS 6cyl

    Hello all,
I have a 2005 STS with the 6 cyl. The check engine light comes on only when I get up to highway speed but the car is running fine. Sometimes it flashes then goes out and other times it stays on. The codes say that I have a misfire on cyl. 1,3,&5 which is one whole bank. The catalytic converter for that side was replaced. Any thoughts would be appriciated.

    Brad

How is your oil level/does it use oil? If it's flashing that's bad, that is a SEVERE misfire being detected...Have you swapped coil packs from side to side to see if the misfire follows them? Have you inspected the spark plugs? They could have been fouled if your cat was failing for a while before it was replaced...I'd start there

    BTW,

    Hi Curtc,

Thanks for the reply. Yes it does use oil. I believe that a couple of the coils were swapped. I don't think that the plugs were replaced. The Cat was failing for awhile before being replaced. One other thing I forgot to mention, After I gas up the car it is hard to start for the first time. Could an O2 sensor be involved?

Nope, that is the EVAP Purge Solenoid causing you to not start after filling up...It's that canister looking part on the rear passenger side of the motor, right on top with hoses attached, it will make a ticking sound when you're engine is running, replace that ticking piece...$50 part and about 10 minutes to R&R...VERY common failure on the 3.6L.

As far as your misfiring I would replace all 6 plugs with OEMs, clean all coil contacts and see how she runs...

And because you mentioned that it does use oil, stay on top of that! If you don't you WILL be replacing your timing chain and that is not a cheap job. I fear a DPO did not do such a good job of this and has since stretched your timing chain...BUT that is worst case scenario, start with the plugs/coils and go from there.
