Is that the best story the detective from the "how can we blame this on the customer bureau" of your local dealership could come up with? That's pretty far fetched. Bunch of crooks. Good luck. Hopefully the Cadillac customer service guys on the forums here are able to help you out. Let us know how that goes.

Oh and I missed the part where fluid is leaking. That sounds like rust through to me.

Still no word on my car. Funny, gm will have nothing to do with the extended warranty that is sold through them. Wonder how much money they get for every one sold?? and i would guess the sales guy gets his cut on selling another $2700 worth of junk to the buyer. But nothing they can do about it. Talked to another gm rep today about the brake lines, same old. We will do the best we can for you, on and on. Yet NO ONE wants to see the pictures that I took like the one posted! The dealer didn't care, finally got an email from them. Both gm reps on the phone didn't have a contact email??!! I had to fax her a picture to put in my file. Wonder if anyone will see it, or how well the fax came out. Losing hope.

Here is an update. The service department at Crestmont Cadillac in Beachwood Ohio is the only ones to look at my brake lines, so its up to them pretty much much to say there is nothing wrong with them. They will not be fixed under GM's corrosion plan, but out of my pocket. As far as the rear end, its been turned down twice now, but they haven't even taken the cover off to see what broke! How is that possible to say I misused my car, allowing the rear end the fail without looking to see if there was some worn parts, cracked parts, bad seal, something other then just whatever it was that I did??

About 50% if you pay what they first ask.

Get a lawyer involved, there is no way I would be paying for this. Although it looks like that thing sat in salt water for a couple weeks, are you 100% sure this is not a hurricane Sandy car?? Even if it is it should be covered under your platinum warranty.

That depends on what the split/pay plan, etc. is with the salesperson. He definitely gets something IF it is on the contract before you go into the Finance office to complete the paperwork, otherwise it ends up with the Finance Manager. I doubt he sees 50%. The dealership usually takes a percentage and the FM gets whats left. If you are delivering 6 cars 20 days a month with warranty you would make 162000/month...... just from the warranty. With that deal I would be on vacation the rest of the year.

All the after sale warranties have large profit in them for the dealer, there is no denying that. But when a claim is accepted for a blown transfer case on one of these vehicles, you make your money back and then some. It depends on how much risk you can tolerate. My 07 purchase was unplanned, I had hoped to wait two years. I opted to gamble and not have an extended warranty. So far I have $800 in wheel bearings and a failed trunk switch. We'll see what happens, but I still love the car.

Re: 2008 STS Blown rear end, Brake lines rusted out

Regardless of who gets what, at the end of the day I was sold a Platinum service contract that the dealer wrote me off on my breakdown before they even turned it in. I have talked to many other service managers, other gm dealer, a ford dealer, and my uncle that has worked with gm one way or another his whole life. Everyone tells me they always fight for their customers to get the work covered. Why would Crestmont Cadillac tell me it wouldn't go through before they even took it apart, or gave it a try? Over scratches on the bottom of the plastic rockers...? Nothing else is damaged under the car, like exhaust, or oil plans (except for the RUST). I was told to contact my auto insurance. Sorry but I believe that is for when accidents happen. I am still looking into a few things but seems the best outcome might be getting maybe half? of my $1800 investment back after 8 months and I pay for the fix and towing. 'The Mechanic' service contract is a joke, and its even worse without someone behind you. I can't understand why a premium auto dealership would want to sell this. Seems like there is nothing good to say about them anywhere online. Resource Automotive, Inc owned by The Warranty Group I do believe. Out of 175 west Jackson, Chicago. GM owners group was no help on the brake lines, or my rear end. All tell me they trust their dealers. My dealer claims to be #1! Really want to get this taken care of soon, but I will be posting final results.

The 50% I was referring to is collectively the dealership. The markup on these is about 50%. How do I know - because I have negotiated warranty's down from list price to nearly half.

Your gripe on the warranty shouldn't be against GM. They make nothing on the sale of an extended warranty (except CPO or possibly GMPP). The money is made by the dealer that sold it and the insurance company that underwrites it. The latter can change over time as contracts get sold.

Unfortunately, I don't consider the car safe to drive. While it sits, you need transportation. Take it to another dealer that honors that warranty. If you are required to take it where you bought it, it was a lousy warranty.

Does Ohio have a Consumer Protection Agency? Start making some phone calls. As for GM Customer Service, stop wasting your time on them.

Well, after 2 months, couple dozen phone calls, 4 times faxing paper work, and getting another gm dealer involved, they said the check is in the mail for the rear end. I have never worked with a company that was such a jerk around. The warranty group, who the service contract was through finally came through, but you never talk to the same person, they have no direct phone numbers, no outbound calling, no direct emails or fax. It all comes down to Crestmont Cadillac doing a crappy job. They put it in as physical damage, that caused the failure. When in fact, it was the failure of the rear end, that blew the hole out the bottom, the physical damage. So at least that's one issue done. Now its all on me to fix the rusted out brake lines. Can't wait to hear what that quote comes back to. The extended warranty does not cover rust, and the gm corrosion coverage does not cover mechanical parts as I am told. Thank you for all the reply's to my post.

Wow, that kind of rust on an 08?

My 98 Olds has brake lines in that condition and one of the steel lines (driver rear brake) actually blew in my driveway when I started it one day and the normal ABS system test activated. I was very lucky it happened in my driveway and not on I95 where it was driven last time. When the line blew I had no brakes, pedal went to the floor and I was lucky to be clear minded enough to use the e-brake to stop the car in the driveway before hitting the house.

Having only lived on the east coast now for less than 10 years I'm a bit worried about my other vehicles and the salt use here. I've already learned that the DIY suspension work I'm used to on my west coast vehicles is something I dread doing now due to the rust/corrosion. I'm also thinking about how to treat the bottom of the vehicle to prevent this kind of thing on my other vehicles. It's already likely a death sentence for my 98 as all the brake and steel fuel lines under the vehicle look like this.

Oil the under side, heavy every year. Everyone has their own mixture they use. The best one I've heard yet is cutting cosmoline down till it will just spray with a gun and hitting it with that. The thinner drys and just a thin coat of it is left. I don't believe you can still buy real cosmoline, but there is other products that took its place.

Cosmoline is spar varnish mixed with a rust preventive oil.
