No, not ALL do...All CAN potentially....05-current, the 3.6L, be it DI or not, have the potential to beer bong oil like it's going out of style...Now I am not saying those engines are complete garbage, but I am saying I wouldn't buy one again

    CAN.

I wouldn't touch one and I'm not loathing without experience. Sisters drinks oil at a rate of 2-3 quarts per 1000 miles.

Mine uses almost none. If it happens, I'll just break down and have the rings replaced.

It's not all of them and it's hard to tell what percentage of them do it because forums are slanted towards talking about problems.

People don't usually start threads and say "Guess what, my car burns no oil".

Agree I don't know why some people are saying that all V6's use oil. I can't speak for the pre-08 ones but my DI hasn't used a drop between changes in 55K miles.

I don't recall anyone saying they all do. We are saying buying one is like buying a 96-98 northstar. Sure looks pretty till it blows a hg. Why play the odds? For the minimal price difference and fuel economy why even bother with the 3.6 when the northstar is that much more reliable. 3.6s have major timing chain issues and only the 07-08 MY are covered by the recall. The LH2 N* is bulletproof.

    Re: Oil eating V6

I've never said they ALL drink oil....But they do ALL have the potential to become oil drinking pigs and consequently develop timing chain slack...Not going to take my chances....My 04 CTS starting rattling on cold starts towards the end of its time with me, that spurred me to trade her in fast before it got worse....

I agree with you guys about trying to get a V8 if you can. But there are more V6s around.

Cadillac definitely made more V6 models...Coincidentally the first one I looked at was my current 1SF V8...Guess I got lucky, not like I would've even looked at a 3.6L anyway

    Re: Oil eating V6

Meant to post this yesterday but this tab got lost in a sea of other tabs ...

Its the same type of thing as when every one claimed that every northstar v8 blew out its head gaskets.
Did a lot of them do it? YES
Did a lot of them NOT do it? YES
The V6 oil consumption will be along the same lines.
It just makes more logical sense to pick the STS that has the now end of life 'bulletproof' Northstar that has 99% of its issues worked out than it does to pick a STS that has the 'new' V6 (DI or non-DI).
It is a new motor design and will and does have issues, notably the chance for excessively bad oil usage and the chance for timing chain breakage.

The HG issue of the Northstar went on for almost a decade and was enough to arguably drive down the value of the cars

So..it was widespread enough that the market knew about it and adjusted resale value accordingly down ward

    that being said

does( did) GM offer any good will warranty program for those that had issues with the V6?

    Re: Oil eating V6

I have heard of some individuals getting good will warranty help from GM in regards to timing chain failure in the V6, not 100% paid for but I have read in the 1st Gen CTS forum about members getting help with approx. half the cost....This will greatly depend on the dealer, the service manager, and the individuals relationship with said dealer....Just because one person got help from a dealer doesn't mean another person will get help from a different dealer.
