I've searched this subject throughtout this forum and haven't really seen absolute answers. I recently installed factory navigation into my non-navigation 2006 STS. Now I am interested in installing TPMS if possible. I believe the concensus is that it can in-fact be done, but I don't really know for sure. Is it possible (with a reasonable amount of modifications) and what exactly is needed? 4 TPMS sensor and a little Tech II programing to the DIM ???
I can't recall exactly, but I thought the 2005 STS may not have had TPMS (I'm sure lots of members can confirm or deny this), but I thought by 2006 it was pretty much standard is all STS's. TPMS does use the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) to pick-up the signal from the sensors so a correctly programmed module is necessary. Of course the "Export" version of the STS uses a different type of TPMS which requires a receiver module near each wheel. There is a configuration setting in the Instrument Panel Module to identify whether the car has TPMS or not, but I don't believe it's as simple as turning it on with a Tech2. I'm pretty sure the RCDLR will need to be reprogrammed. To get a dealership to do this will be difficult since all the programming they do is VIN specific. If the car isn't programmed with it now, it won't be once they finish either. There is the option of swapping the RCDLR with one from a wrecker. This will also necessitate setting up key fobs and security again since these functions are also partly managed by the RCDLR.
There's a thread with research that once it is set in the RCDLR (always have memory lapse) that module must be replaced to disable it. To add it on a car that has an RCDLR capable of the task, should not be as hard.
You will need an activation tool for the sensors as well. (Activating replacement sensors can't be done by cycling air pressures. That's only for rematching wheel positions.)
The correct OEM caps & stems are aluminum. Two different metals in contact in high moisture environments is bad news (unless your name is Corrosion.)
Doing a little bit more reading, I found this response to one of GM's FAQ's regarding TPMS:
"Starting with the 2008 MY, all GM vehicles sold in the United States and most vehicles sold in
Canada are equipped with tire pressure monitoring, to meet the mandates of FMVSS 138.
Some vehicles built prior to the 2008 MY have tire pressure monitoring; check vehicle build and
RPO information to be sure."
