    2005 STS oil problem

    Hey guys,

Bought mine about 4 months ago, and within that time period it has gone through 7 quarts of oil. We are currently in talks with our dealership, and the Cadillac support team, but I'm not sure if they are honestly going to do anything about it.

I was just looking to see if any of you other guys had this problem, and what exactly you had someone do to fix it?

By the way it only has 66,000 miles on it, seemed very weird to me.

I assume V6 (known to eat oil like no other)?

How many miles have you gone in those 4 months and 7 quarts?

    Re: 2005 STS oil problem

It's been about 3,000 miles in these 4 months. Wish I would have known this thing sucks this bad with oil before I bought it. If given a chance to trade it back in to the dealership for a new car if they won't fix it, would you?

Look in the 1st Gen CTS forum...TONS of info regarding this problem as well as fixes.

Another 3.6 oil guzzler....damn shame cause it is actually a decent motor when it is running like it is supposed to...

    Hello robcinnafun,

I apologize that you are experiencing an issue with oil usage in your STS. If you private messaged me your case number or your VIN, I could look into your case for you and keep an eye on it. Thank you very much for your time. Please keep us updated on this situation.

    Re: 2005 STS oil problem

If that's the only thing wrong be smart about a trade. It may be tempting to simply unload your headache but understand the real cost to make it right versus that offer. What if Cadillac & your dealer offered to do rings and valves and split the cost with you. (I don't know what it needs, but it might be worth a lot more in that condition than the 'replacement' beinf offered.

Please don't misunderstand. You know your situation far better than I. But make sure you've exhausted all your options if you really do like the car.

If you'd rather just be done with it? So be it!

I love my Cadillac, but the dealership is willing to switch it out with any other car they have around the price range. Even if I do get the rings and valves fixed, would any problems arise in the future?

Rings have cured many others issues. Can't say you won't have any issues with the car in the future. You also don't know what issues you may incur on whatever new vehicle you get.

I would not 'swap it out with another car' get it fixed and get them to help fix it.

    Reasons being:
    1. They are going to solve the issue (which is you) by giving you a different car, then they will re-sell the STS to someone else who hopefully won't notice or care about the massive oil consumption.
    - that way they won't have to pay to fix anything and they will certainly not fix it for the next guy.
    2. You have no idea what issues the next car will have.

Hopefully that makes some sense ... having a hard time wording what I'm trying to say here.

If you are trying to be preventative then I would have the timing chains replaced at the same time since the motor is already torn down.
That would make you set in my mind.

    Re: 2005 STS oil problem

I tend to agree. If you've got an STS equipped to your preference; you've got quite a special car.

Forum members report that rings fix the V6 excessive oil consumption. Any flawed timing chains & guides are out of the GM distribution system. An engine rebuild would identify any potential cam issues which really aren't all that common, anyway. You'd be good for the foreseeable future. Anything can happen but your V6 would be fine.

They sold you a car 'fit for use'. Be persistent. Be nice. But 1 quart every 500 miles means adding oil every time you fill the gas!

If only my mileage was that good... I fill up from between 1/4 and 1/8 of tank left at around 250 miles...

Same, I'm lucky to get to 325 before she hits "E", but hey, that's 20MPG if I used 16 gallons, I'll take that in a full sized, V8 powered luxury car...

    Who needs MPG's??? I got a Cadillac

I just recently checked my oil the other day, was a bit low but she's only used a hair over a quart after 11k, OLM is at 12% (time to change it!). Not worried about that oil useage at all...

Just talked to Cadillac, they aren't going to do anything about it. Can't decide in what direction I should head in now.

I'd go for the new rings and tell the dealer they should pay at least half.
