2006 STS, timing chains and catalytic converters
I have s 2006 STS, 3.6 engine, with 86,000 miles.
Last Nov (82,000 miles) I was hearing a knocking type noise from the passenger side, sounded like it was coming from the rear of the engine. Check engine light did come on, I took it to the dealer here in Akron, they told me the timing chains needed replacing and also the code showed a bad catalytic converter passenger side. Nothing was in warranty, they wanted $3000 for the repairs. I told them just to do the timing chains first($1900), then I would get the converter later.
This is where I think it gets odd, it only took them a half a day to finish the work, and the service writer calls me and informs me that he took the GM rep to lunch and talked him into covering the converter under warranty. When I received the car back and paid the $1914 I could not see any indication of engine work, I did see a new converter, looked like a big tin can, nothing like the original or the one still on the drivers side.
Now this is May, (86,000 miles) I started to hear the exact same noise coming from the drivers side, check engine light came on again, I took it back to the dealer, now they tell me its the drivers side converter that is bad causing the noise, they charged me $109.00 to check it. They want $1000 for replacement of the converter, told me it would take just over an hour for the repair. I have called GM customer care and I am hoping they will warranty this other converter.

I apologize for your vehicle experiencing the same noise from before. I understand how this situation can be frustrating, having recently replaced parts on your vehicle.
