Considering a used 08 STS...what to watch out for?

    Hi All,

I am considering a 2008 STS with approx 60K Kms. Is there a way to perform an onboard diagnostic (similar to 00-04 DTS)??
Is there potential issues that I should be particularly weary of that the dealers may try to hide?

    Any help/advice is much appreciate!

    Thanks you.

Do you have any more info on the car? What features it has and options? Certain things can be more problematic or pricey to repair depending on the options that the car has. One thing that is pretty common is the heated steering wheel stops working and you cannot get a replacement. But I think that was more prone to 05-07.

Onboard diagnostics went away unfortunately, buy a scan tool...

    I really miss that feature.

You could just test drive it to a parts store and have them scan it, most do it for free.

Truely, if you're interested in an STS, you're getting ahead of yourself.

First, test drive several differently equipped models. You'll find them to be very different in many ways. Decide on the options important to your and only consider like-equipped cars. In most cases, retro-fits are not cost effective.

When you have a likely candidate, unless it is sold with an extended warranty, pay to have it inspected and make sure all the features work or negotiate discounts accordingly.

    Opinions vary.

Re: Considering a used 08 STS...what to watch out for?

I bought my '07 STS with 57,000 miles 6 months ago and it has been perfect in every way, no problems at all. I paid $18,500 so it's a steal for a car that cost 50K new and will probably go 200,000 miles since GM did an extensive update of the N* for the STS and fixed all the issues it had in previous years. Mine hasn't used a drop of oil or coolant or leaked a drop of anything in the 4000 miles since I bought it and everything works perfectly. Only thing I don't like is that the speed governor cuts in at 112 mph, which is absurd for a car with 320 hp. My friend's dad's Prius has a higher top speed!!! But this can be fixed with tuning software for $500. I considered a Chrysler 300C but I'd rather tell people I drive a Cadi than a Chrysler.

Please tell me if you hear that tapping sound from the engine, when it's running and all warmed up. If not, you have a GEM that nobody seems to have in that engine. 2008 V6 3.6 DI. Although many, if not all tech. people say;,, that tapping sound is normal for this particular engine. Just ANOYING as ---. Good luck !

I just bought a 2008 STS, 3.6 V6 with 65,000 miles on it and after only three days of driving; I am highly impressed. I only paid $16k with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. The only problem I've found with it is that the left rear window and locks don't work, but I hear the gears engaging just no action. Other than that, an extremely well performing car.

    Sounds like a former rental.

Yours was most definitely a rental or fleet vehicle when it was new.

I've had mine well over 120...On a track of course

However being a fleet model he likely has the fuel saving rear end / final drive ratio ... so he might get a cool 28MPG highway like EChas3's wife's car.

Meh...I bought a V8...I wasn't overly concerned about fuel economy

Sucks that it got to $4.29 here recently, got it for $3.87 today after a .20/g discount though.
