    STS in the Snow?

I am looking at purchasing an STS from the estate of a friends father who recently passed. 2005 V8 AWD. 59K mi. It looks like a brand new car. I am told he babied the car. Always garaged, and religiously maintained by the dealer.

Anyway I intend to use this car as a daily driver here in New England. I am interested to hear from you folks in the snow belt who drive your STSs all year long. How does the car handle in the snow? What do you do for winter wheels and tires? I noticed that Tire Rack does not offer steel wheels for the car.

    Thanks for looking!

just bought a 2006 AWD last october and it did wonderful in the midwest winter. As far as tires the previous owner had a set of all season michalins and they performed just fine. and with the traction control paired with the stabalizing system you should be just fine.

I think the Michelins are lousy tires, hard, slick & noisy. Any tire over 5 years old is old, regardless.

The AWD STS is top-notch in snow. Even if it has the 18" staggered setup, you can go with 235/50 all around for a compliant & quiet ride.

I have to leave the RWD V in the garage when it snows (drives me nuts), but the STS4 does quite well (my wife mostly drives it now, but I used to).

My RWD STS performed admirably this winter here in MN. Lost the rear end a couple times but the TC and Stability System saved her. I ran Cooper Weather-Master ST/2's on 17" CTS wheels. Dunno if I'd trade her for an AWD model, I like that extra speed.

    Re: STS in the Snow?

I've seen plenty of 4WD/AWD vehicles in the ditch this winter, in fact, most of them fall into that category. AWD helps for sure but it doesn't magically turn a car into a snow machine like some seem to think.

I went through one winter in my CTS and am hoping this winter wraps up soon (please, please, please go away! Got dumped on AGAIN!) in my RWD STS...Haven't had much trouble getting around except for few select moments when having AWD may or may not have helped.

In summary, it's all about the rubber and the driver. Good tires do wonders in snow, whether they are dedicated winter tires or all seasons.

If you're driving an awd in the snot and find yourself in a ditch ... I'd say you are at fault, not the car.

exactly. people think they are in AWD and not succeptable to accidents, well, you are... I LOVE how well mine handles in the snow and ice. Just don't drive too fast and you will not have a problem. Be careful, you do not stop any better with AWD, obviously...

100% agree. Don't know how many times I've seen 4WD/AWD vehicles go flying by me on the freeway only to see them sitting in the ditch a few miles up...Slow and steady is the name of the game when it comes to winter driving.
