2011 STS Noise on start up?

I had the 08 CTS with the 3.6 DI engine and i know it was a bit noisy sometimes. The issue im hearing on my 2011 STS is on a cold start up, it sounds like a clicking noise in the engine for about 1 to 2 seconds, and then goes away. If i turn it off and start it again it doesnt make the noise, seems to only be on the first start. Normal?

I would guess it's just the VVT dealing with the low oil pressure combined with the thicker oil due to the colder temp. Probably nothing to worry about...

You might want to make sure your next oil change includes the correct oil filter.

    ----------

    Oh yeah, use Mobil1 5W30.

    ----------

Stupid me. You have the V6. Use the recommended oil.

What filter does everyone use? The only one I was able to find for this and the CTS's etc. was the Fram CH8765s (not 100% sure on the numbers there) seems to be the only filter at the store.

Re: 2011 STS Noise on start up?

Mine was loud this morning on start up. It was cold for GA (32). I've noticed a slight 'tick' that sounds cyclical. It doesn't completely go away though. I've been debating on taking it in for service to see if there is actually an issue. Still under factory warranty. I believe its more than just "normal DI noise"

Re: 2011 STS Noise on start up?

Mine has kind of went away, we have had a few 50 degree days in a row. Only issue i seem to have now is my power steering is making a slight whining noise after the car gets warmed up and driven for a few minutes. It almost sounds like after cleaning a window with Windex, the squeak rub noise when rubbing the window dry. It only does it when i first start to turn the steering wheel and then goes away. Any ideas?

Re: 2011 STS Noise on start up?

That first start clicking noise is normal when cold and is nothing to worry about. I hope you are using Synthetic oil. Have you checked your power steering fluid. It only takes a little bit low on fluid to make a noise.

Re: 2011 STS Noise on start up?

The fluid is a reddish brown. I sucked that fluid out, added new fluid, did the turn the wheel to each side and checked the fluid again and brown fluid came back into the resevoir. I removed and added fluid about 7 times and cant get all the brown fluid out completely as I ran out of new fluid. Im taking the car in tomorrow under warranty. I could of bought another 4 qts and tried to flush it all out myself but i dont want to buy it and waste the fluid and have that not be the issue.
