    Window Tint Percent?

Just picked up my black on black 11 STS on Thursday. Trying to figure out the best tint percent to go with. On my previous black on black 08 CTS, I only tinted the rear windshield and 2 rear doors 5% limo black. You could almost not see in the front windshield when standing in front of the car due to the black interior. At first I was thinking of doing 35% on all windows except for the front windshield. Then I was thinking of doing 5% on the rear windshield, 20% on the rear doors and 35% on the front doors. Front window tint is illegal in NJ, ive had it on my white Escalade for almost 2 years and only been stopped twice for it, usually don't have many issues and never have issues in my hometown with the cops. 5% all the way around will be too dark, and im thinking that 20% all the way around will be a little dark as well because of the black on black. Any opinions on best combination to go with? Maybe 5% on the rear windshield and rear doors and 20 to 35% on the front doors?

If the law didn't stop me from tinting my windsheild, concern for the HUD display & already marginal GPS signal would do so.

But it's your car, have fun!.

HUD wasn't affected by my tint, my GPS was marginal to begin with and still is... I might actually say its better with the tint.
I have 35% on all sides and rear, with 50% on entire windshield and 5% on the moonroof.

I feel that the sides could be a little darker though so If I was to do it again I would do 20% on rear and all sides and 50% for the windshield.

    Re: Window Tint Percent?

I did 35% on all, none on windshield. Pretty happy with it. Make sure they do a good job on the back window, it's tough with all the wires and black matte border. Hell I have enough trouble cleaning it.

If I had to do it again I might go 20% on the back.

35% is the legal limit here, but of course tinting it 35% plus the window's natural tint makes it less than legal, but no problems so far, and I did get stopped once for speeding. Does give them a nitpick if they want to be jerks, but IMO they can always do that (you seem to have a busted taillight! *smash*)

Out of curiosity, if you got stopped for tint on the windshield, did they make you pull it off? Then you redid it?

I've been stopped dozens of times over the last 10 years for tint. Never been forced to pull it off. Seen many tickets been threatened to have my car impounded been told my tint is a safety hazard to cops that pull me over for it. I've had a medical exemption for about 3 years now ... Makes many officers really upset and some of them believe they make the laws still and give me a ticket anyways that I get to waste time going to the courthouse showing the document to them and they dismiss the ticket.

    Re: Window Tint Percent?

I had 35% on all windows but the windshield on my 95 STS...I thought that looked really good IMO, wasn't too dark so I could still see out at night, and was just dark enough for the day time. Granted I got stopped a few times as 50% is the legal limit in MN for passenger cars (trucks/suvs have different laws). I want to tint the 06 but don't want to give the fuzz a reason to stop me, also don't want to waste my money on 50% tint...decisions, decisions...

    Re: Window Tint Percent?

Anyone know what percent they have coming from the factory? I've been thinking about getting a little more tinting on mine, not too much, just enough to make it a little more comfy while riding, but I want to have a reference point to go off of.

The tint is 70% on all windows from factory on the STS. It says it on the glass in the bottom corner.

I think that's DOT required on automotive glass nowadays. Importing a car built elsewhere involves thousands of such qualifications & certifications. Some provinces of Canada are reputed to be just as hard on modifications.

    Re: Window Tint Percent?

Thanks. Also, I was talking to a buddy of mine that had his windows tinted. He said the place where he took his car did some sort of spray on tinting. I was always under the assumption that it was some sort of film, or plastic sheet that is pasted onto the window. Anyone know the difference between the two methods, if one is better than the other, or even if spray on tinting is real?

Spray on would require removal of the window from the car. I've never heard it done and it would be damn near impossible to get even coverage. In my mind not a real thing. Factory dyes the glass. Film is what is used in the aftermarket world.

    Re: Window Tint Percent?

Heres a couple shots in general and the tint pic. Went with 20% on the rear 3 and 35% on the front doors. Then a shot before i bought my car at Cadillac and another shot with my truck which i kept in the family.
