2008 STS V Thinking of buying one again

I bought a 2008 STS in 2012 DI motor, and my wife hit a pole in a parking lot and totaled it with 32K miles on it. Now an STS V 2008 has my intrest. I am wondering how are these northstar engines on oil leaks?

I am currently driving a 97 STS northstar and go through about 1qrt every 1K miles. I have 153K on it now. The motor has been pretty good to me but leaks oil and some owners have had head gasket problems. I know this is a completely diffrent car now in 2008 but I am just wondering what kind of problems I may run into with the motor or car if I purchase it.

2008 STS V 39K miles ten spoke rims for $31K. I believe the extrended warrenty has fell off due to time. the car is 5 years old now I am worried about spending 30K on a 5 year old car with no GM warrenty.

STS V does not have a northstar engine.

Ummm...yeah it does, just a 4.4L version of it, due to thicker cylinder walls to handle the added boost.

Probably should post in the STS-V forum. 4.4 SC Northstar is a good engine. Generally no major issues, but these cars can have a lot of little things go wrong.

Depending when it was placed into service will determine when the GM Warranty expires. It's 4 years or 50k Miles whichever comes first. If it still has the GM Warranty and it's being sold by a Cadillac dealer, you should be able to have it certified (if it's not already certified). That will extend the existing warranty an additional 50k miles and or two years, whichever comes first. Its' a great deal. I think I paid an 1100 or so to the Caddy dealer to certify my 2006 sts. The warranty paid for itself at least twice.... and then some.

If by chance that car was placed into service in Feb of 2009 .... it still has it's GM factory warranty.

Zek4964, please don't hesitate to send me an email at Katie_Lucille@gmexpert.com if you would like me to pull up the build sheet and warranty information for a particular STS V you're considering! All I would need to research would be the last eight of its VIN.

    Best,

I stand corrected. The 4.4L is one of the Northstar series

Re: 2008 STS V Thinking of buying one again

I've got over 80,000 miles and use almost no oil at all, maybe a pint per year (10,000 miles). My wife's uses a bit more, but still less than a quart. I was fortunate enough that the original owner changed the oil every 3,000 miles for the first 18 months. My wife's car was originally a Hertz rental. She bought it at 9,000 and who knows if it was ever changed?

I only recall one member reporting a HG issue. That issue has been fixed.

My V doesn't appear to use any oil. I believe the engines in the V are hand assembled. I don't believe oil leaks are a common complaint for the V.

Thanks for all the info, I loved my 08 v6 but it lacked the power i was needing. I think the V would do just fine.

So did you get it? Or is that one still available after 2 months?
