    First Crash

Thought I would share what a 4 -5 mph hit looks like from a pick up trucks bumper. Have 1,200 miles on car, no one hurt, that is what counts.

It was in a parking lot and I was stopped and backed into, never bring a nice car to a mall during the Christmas frenzy

Well as long as nobody was hurt, that's the good thing.

But there are some things you just don't want to see happen

    OUCH.....

I hate it when bumper A misses bumper B. You are seeing "vehicle cumple zone" in action. Notice how nicely the hood buckled to prevent it from spearing thru the windshield.

I will bet that it is at least $5,000. in damage.

The damage is going to be around $10,000. They are still figuring it out as all part numbers are not in Cadillac or GM's system. The adaptive cruise device alone is $2,700, part only. I agree that the crumple zones worked as designed, a little surprised at the damage at such a slight hit. The guy in the truck did not even know he hit me as I felt nothing also.

Was it a legitimate accident, or was he just being an idiot?

    I agree, at least 10.

Holy Crap! That was a 5MPH hit! The lt front fender is pushed in! Reminds me of the time I hit a Civic in the rear. I totaled it(an 04) and only did 800 damage to mine. It was truly unbelievable. My front bumper was almost in her backseat and I went from zero to less than 5MPH. This is truly disturbing because I watched a CLK 430 run into more than 10 cars (on Real Video) with minimal damage. The construction must be far superior. Damn, sorry about the luck!

    Re: First Crash

Too bad, sorry to see the pic but like you said, at least no one was hurt, sheet metal can always be replaced.

I used to own a mid 80s Mercedes 560SEL which was built like a tank. I was stopped in traffic and got rearended by a Honda, I barely felt it, I thought ok, no big deal. When I got out of the car and went around back I was stunned...I had a scratch on the bumper and minor sheet metal dmg where the bumper absorber had pushed in from the impact. The Honda, well it was totalled...belching smoke, the entire front clip was destroyed.

Sigh...well, find a good body shop and put this all behind you.

(By the way, my first post on the boards)

    Re: First Crash

Glad to hear that no one was hurt. But the way your car looks is the result of the big three several years ago getting the crash requirement for bumpers reduced from 10mph to 5mph. Yes all the crush zones worked, but they might not have been needed if the bumpers were rated at 10mph.

Isn't the requirement now 2.5 mph?

    Re: First Crash

It's sad how much damage a low speed impact can cause. I guess this is part of the reason why insurance is so expensive. The bumper covers are so fragile!
