2005 Cadlillac STS 4.6l Strut Replacement

So, like many people on the forum, I need to replace the front struts on my caddy. I would like to replace them with the reasonably priced KYB 551606 after market struts. Unfortunately, my car also has the Magnetic Ride Control sensors. Based on reading other posts, I was thinking there might be a way of just putting in these struts and then disabling the Ride Control sensors so the check engine light doesnt come on. Does anyone know of a way to do that? The last thing I want to do is pay the dealership $1400 to fix this. Thanks

Check with Chris Heath @ Rippy. He can get the right struts at less than half that (maybe)!

Re: 2005 Cadlillac STS 4.6l Strut Replacement

    UPDATE:

So, I put in the KYB 551606 struts and am now riding around with the "check suspension" light on, and the dashboard says it is throttling the car to less than 80mph. It also feels like the transmission is maybe shifting a little early, but if I put it in manual mode it seems normal. Doesnt really bother me. At this point I have spent $408. ($258 for the struts + $150 for the installation) I plan on driving around like this until I figure out if there is a resistor I (my mechanic) can connect to the sensor to get the check suspension light off. If someone knows how to get that light off without buying OEM struts, please let me know...

EChas3--thanks for the suggestion. I didnt contact Chris Heath @ Rippy cause based on other posts, I didnt think he could get the struts for significantly less than $700. Maybe I am wrong and should have tried anyway.

I would have gone with salvage, first.

    Good luck.

Yeah, I initially tried to find them in a local salvage yard and had no luck. I am a little hesitant to buy salvage items on ebay or the internet. Plus, I am not sure how long struts that already have 50k+ miles are really going to last. Mine went out at just over 80k...

Ya...I bought mine from gmpartsdepartment.com they came in 4 days. I bought ALL 4...2 front magnetic ride and 2 back air/magnetic whatever they are....the cost of the shocks out the door was 1,480.00....my dealer put in all 4 for $395.00. If you wanted to do the front 2 (magnetic ride) they are about3 $300.00 a piece(back ones are more).

Re: 2005 Cadlillac STS 4.6l Strut Replacement

Yep, my struts went out around the 84k mile mark. The cheapest I had found on the internet was about $700 delivered to my house. So, that is good info on the $600 website. The cadillac I had before this one was a 2001 cadillac deville. I maintained that one meticulously always taking everything to the dealership even when it was out of warranty. In spite of this, at the 76k mile mark, the motor fell apart beyond repair. In an effort to not make the same mistake again, I decided to always take the cheapest route possible on this car when fixing it. I have never taken it to the dealership, and I only use the cheapest after market parts I can find. I dont think having regular struts and driving around with check suspension warning light does anything physically bad to the car, and the light doesnt bother me. My goal is to just get this car over 120k+ miles, and then hopefully look for something else....

Re: 2005 Cadlillac STS 4.6l Strut Replacement

The really dissapointing thing about Gm's MRC is longevity. When I bought my car I researched the whole MR fluid(made by Lord) and they test this stuff through extreme conditions and actually use it in military huge vehicle applications...and basically from their research they pull shocks out and see no degridation of fluid after 1million+cycles. So to me its a build quality issue with the tube. When I replaced mine about 4 months ago they were made by DELPHI, the new ones are made by BWI(out of Mexico)...I will say the new ones looked a tab larger in diameter than the old ones. for how much they cost, they should last longer, I have driven plenty of friends newer Honda,BMW,Mecedes with more miles than my car and the shocks still feel super....so to me its prety dissapointing that these really shouldnt last almost forever. I have no evidence, but I bet the non adaptive shocks in the 3.6(made by sachs) last longer...sachs offers lifetime warranty on their equip if you buy them.
