Buzzing/Clicking sound on my 05 STS

Hey forum, I just bought my 05 STS V6 40k miles, under normal acceleration there is a buzzing sound coming from the dash or under hood. It only seems to do it while driving and will be noticeable under normal acceleration but will go away instantly after giving it about half throttle.

I can't reproduce the sound in park or in drive with my foot on the brake, any thoughts? I just wanted to get some input before taking it to the dealer... Thanks.

    -Nathan

I have a sound to and it sounds like its coming from the drivers side of the engine. You can only hear it when your driving and speeding up.

Same here. I have mentioned it before, it sounds like a "mini supercharger".

Have any of you noticed whether this sound disappears after the engine has warmed up?

It can be difficult to diagnose based only on the description. I've driven other vehicles with cracked exhaust manifolds and or bad exhaust manifold gaskets that made sounds similar to what is being described (frequently while under load). Much of the time the symptoms I'm familiar with will disappear once everything heats up.

It happens all the time warm or not, it only happens at the lower rmps while driving then goes away after a certain rpm. Its very faint you only can hear it with the fan and radio off. Its close to the firewall so maybe the brake booster valve.

wow, sounds like I'm not the only one with this sound. Yes, warm or hot it will always do it until it reaches a certain RPM and immediately goes away. Does anyone have resources to get more info on the following TSB:

"TSB Number: 050605001 NHTSA Number: 10013478 TSB Date: January 1, 2005 Date Added to File: April 19, 2005
    Failing Component:Engine And Engine Cooling
    Summary:Buzz type noise inside vehicle.

I do. I have the GM service manual at home. I'll print out a PDF later and link it.

Wouldn't suprise me if the Catalytic converters were going bad, I would love to look in it and see how much oil deposits are in it

Re: Buzzing/Clicking sound on my 05 STS

I just found out from the dealer today that there is an emissions warranty up to 80k miles and would cover the catalytic converters if that's what's causing the sound.

I'm going to have it in next week for them to check it out...

Re: Buzzing/Clicking sound on my 05 STS

A vibrating exhaust component noise can often be duplicated in Park. I know the OP said it only happened in gear but it's worth trying different throttle positions, etc.

Is there any way to reproduce the noise when not in motion? If so, the old rubber hose trick might help. Get a short length of hose and put one end to your ear and try different locations with the other end while someone else does the trick that repeats the noise.
