It's actually a cross between a rattle and grinding noise for just a couple of seconds after starting. Jsut started happening a couple of weeks ago. Stopped for a while and is doing it again.
What engine do you have? If it's a V6 it could be a timing chain. I assume you've checked the oil level. It could also be an AC compressor. You may want to turn the climate control off next time you shut it down.
Well so much for those ideas! Now here's another possibility. The AC compressor can make noise due to 2 different conditions. If the clutch is engaged, it could signal internal compressor problems. If the clutch is disengaged (AC off) it could signify problems with the clutch bearing which only has relative movement when the AC is off. So next time leave the climate control on when you shut down and see if that makes a difference.
I am currently experiencing the same thing with a 2005 STS. When cold it will grind everyday on startup. It shut down twice last week and yesterday at startup it made the noise and continued and I could smell the metal...
Any thoughts??
