    STS Cabin Air Filter Change

    Hi all:
Looks like this topic still has some questions from STS owners.

I had my 2006 STS4 in for a tire rotation at 28k and asked the tech to change the engine air filter and cabin air filter. The tech can't find the cabin air filter and calls my dealer. My dealer tells him the STS doesn't have a cabin air filter!

I get the car home and did some poking around, the owner's manual isn't very clear, but the cabin air filter is pretty obvious once you find it.

The vent cover just under the windshield on the passenger side comes off with three 9 mm hex screws. Pull it off and underneath, in back of the battery, is a plastic cabin air filter box. It is removed by pulling sideways on both sides to release the plastic catches.

The cabin air filter slides in vertically. Apparently, you can buy either a plain paper or activated charcoal/paper, which removes odors coming in. Several companies make them, here's a link to Car Stuff, one vendor which carries several different brands and types.

Here are photos. It's easy to do. Hope this helps somebody!:

The Cadillac stealer oops I mean dealer quoted me a price of $100 to replace the cabin air filter. What a ripoff. All it takes is 5 minutes to change and a good carbon filter can be had for $30.Shame on them!!!

Did mine about a month ago--sure is a Mickey Mouse setup--it's very hard to tell if it's in there correctly or not.

I'll toss in my negative commentary on the engineering too.

Both the engine air filter and the cabin air filter are pretty lousy to change. It's still worth spending the 10 minutes each to do it @ home.

sure would have been nice to have a part number for the filter you bought... or even the charcole filter part number too...
Just saying.. would make looking up the item a SNAP....
    thanks for the post
I am curious to know when does the dealer suggest that this filter be replaced?

Re: STS Cabin Air Filter Change

I replaced mine with an AC Delco (OEM) activated charcoal filter from Autozone. They went ahead and looked up the part number for me. Autozone wouldn't be a bad place to start. Don't hold me to this, but I believe I only paid about $30.00 for it. Also, I think GM suggests replacing the filter after 50k miles or sooner if you live in a dustier or dirtier area.

I was quoted $70 by a regular (non-dealer) repair shop

The one thing that I see here is the fact that they rotated tires that should be different sizes from front to rear. The front ones are smaller then the rear ones!

You better check the sizes of the tires if they were factory. My dealer would not rotate them for that reason.

Can anyone recommend a good place online to purchase a good carbon filter.
