Rear differential leak again

Remove this ad
Hey,
Have been less than impressed with this issue, car drives great, but sad that two weeks after having seals replaced in diff, it is leaking again. Cadillac sits next to my 1992 Mustang GT in my garage and only the floor under the Cadillac has oil stains. The Ford with 100,000 miles has been bone dry and the $56,000 Cadi leaks oil. Pitiful.

Re: Rear differential leak again

These are Getrag differentials made in Germany or at least it is a German company. I am surprised at the poor quality. Mine has a slight whine between 40 and 50 MPH under very light acceleration. No leaks though at just under 10k miles. First vehicle that I have owned with a whine in the rear end like that. I took it to the service dept at the dealer and they can't hear it. Yeah right.

Re: Rear differential leak again

I had a diff fluid leak and an oil leak with my 2005 V8 at 7K miles, with 2 nice stains in the garage to match. The car is leased, this is the 3rd consecutive STS, the 1999 was the best of the lot. Little glitches like this plus recalls on welding quality and rainsense wipers will make me re-think a fourth.

PS Has anyone located wiper blade replacements?

Re: Rear differential leak again

A few drips each week.

PS, the wiper blades you have to get from GM.

As I remember, they were ICON's and ran about $30 each. One is bigger than other.

Re: Rear differential leak again

GM traditionally used Dana diffs, then Dana ran into major financial trouble.

Re: Rear differential leak again

A leak? I wish, more like a constant drip causing a nauseating smell throughout the whole car and garage for that matter. I pull up for the repair and the service technician could smell the problem, the local dealership has replaced this seal again just three weeks ago for the third time (that is 1, 2, and 3 times) along with just about every other annoying problem this beautiful car had built into it. While my car was in for repair the lovely people at the dealership were nice enough to let me diagnose another Caddy rental car that did the same thing all over my driveway. I believe it was an SRX this time but I'm not quite sure of my memory because I have had more Cadillac rentals in the last year than most small car dealerships will see in an entire decade.

Re: Rear differential leak again

somebody with knowledge will know this....does your car use the same Getrag diff as the CTS-V.
if so, ALL the 06 V diffs leaked out the top blowhole. every one. it goes away.
its a design "feature". you 06 guys best make sure its not that before you go getting perfectly good diffs replaced. leaking seals, i mean actual bad seals, are rare (on Vs).

Re: Rear differential leak again

I just had mine replaced at 9300 miles on my 06 STS AWD. It's kind of bittersweet for me since I just purchased at an auction and kinda freaked when the seal started leaking. Glad to see it's common and not caused by excessive wear or abuse. I hope the replacement holds.

Re: Rear differential leak again

Hi all:
Just joined the forum, I own a 2006 STS4 V6 I bought new this summer. It has about 6k miles on it and I just noticed the rear diff leak on the floor of the garage after driving it the other day. Drove it again and put some newspaper on the floor when I parked it and it leaked again, about a tablespoon each time. I plan on dropping it off at the dealer today, he claims he never heard of the problem. Hope this gets fixed - I like the car and have had no other problems at all with it.
