It was early in the morning after the car had been sitting outside (Chicago) in 20 degree temperature. I got in, started the car and turned the rear defroster on to melt the ice that blanketed my rear window. My wife got in the front passenger side and shut the car door hard. At that very moment, I heard what I thought was ice sliding off of my rear window. Unfortunately, what I thought was ice was actually glass.
The shattering left a large open circular pattern in the rear window and the remaining glass was completely spidered.
There was no impact on the window, the rear window defrost was not left on overnight (which is not possible anyways) and there are no other apparent causual factors.
The dealer is replacing - no questions asked - although they did point out several small dents in the trunk (from luggage being dropped onto the trunk) implying something else may have caused the shattering. The dealer also wouldn't acknowledge knowing of other customers with similar shattering issues or any known defect with the window (manufacturing or installation).
I suspect this is some kind of defect. Overall, I have found the 2005 STS to have more issues that my previous 3 Cadillacs - probably related to the increase in high technology and overall system integration., my XM stopped working 2 months ago and will finally be fixed along with the window. The first time that I brought the car to repair the XM, it took 30 minutes for them to determine that they needed several days to just diagnose the problem. |

My nightmare is now about the damage caused by the glass - when the car was in transit to the dealer to have the window replaced, the glass blew across the car and chipped the paint. Roof, hood, all four doors need to be sanded and painted. The front window was chipped in two places, it needs to be replaced also. Cadillac customer service says talk to roadside assistance, roadside assistance says talk to cadillac customer service blah blah blah they bounce me back and forth and I am furious. Had to put in a claim with my insurance company. It's going to cost me $1000 ($500 comp deductible + $500 glass deductible) plus the rental car.
How's that for service? |

The dealer sent a guy to my house to replace the window. They talked about me possibly having to pay for it but I would have raised hell if they tried that. Dealer covered the cost. The Widow guy told me it might have been metal direct on glass and showed me it started down at the bottom by the trunk. |

Thanks to this thread, my dad has a new rear window covered under factory warranty. I printed this thread, and my dad faxed it to the product manager at the dealer who subsequently fixed the defective glass for free. I hope the new one lasts at least until the end of the lease! |

The creeps would probably have blamed that or said it invalidated the warranty. By far the worst experience I have ever had with a new car and I thought part of what I was buying was good service. I am going to trade it in as soon as possible on something else and I will NEVER EVER buy a GM car again. I might just get rid of my Silverado and my Malibu while I'm at it. I can't beleive the heartache they have put me through for a "warranty" issue. I have bought 6 GM cars in the last 7 years, spent well over $100,000 on their products, and they treat me like crap. Screw them. The next six cars I buy and the next $100,000 I spend will be with some other company. |

After many phone calls, emails, and generally making a pain in the rear out of myself, Cadillac has decided to pay for everything. Cadillac rep called me and said when I get my car back from the body shop and am satisfied with the results, they are prepared to "make me an offer".
I'll let y'all know what that "offer" turns out to be.
Better be good. |

I'm hearing alot of pops and creaks coming from my rear-seat area while driving and am wondering if my rear window is about to blow...so to speak. |

The tint held all of the glass in place and did not let the interior get ruined from thousands of pieces of glass! |
