I recall some joke about if cars were powered by Microsoft...

Was the punchline like: Close all the windows, restart it and proceed!

I agree with WillySTS, the dash and Nav screen are superior.

I also agree with MacMuse to a large extent. In Information Technology, hardware and software choices are becoming independent. (After 40 years in the industry, I am seeing true hardware/operating system/software independence from desktop to enterprise systems.)

If I could cost effectively use a particular model's inbuilt navigation display with a large number of vendor's systems, that car would be much more attractive.

Re: Stupid Nav.

I just returned from a 3800 mile vacation road trip, and the nav got me to every hotel, home, restaurant, and POI I programmed into it, with just 2 minor glitches.

Re: Stupid Nav.

That's the problem. You have to program everything into it. What if I was driving down the highway and I was dead tired and decided I needed a place to stay. On my Garmin I just tell it to list all the motels near me and it spits out a list starting with the closest going to the farthest away. I don't have to bring up the map, program the way points to ONLY show me motels and then spend the next who knows how long touching each POI on the map to see what it is. This is stupid on a $2+K Nav system when a $200 Garmin will do as I said at the begining. I expect a whole lot more out of the GM Nav. I also don't expect it to take me to a place to eat off the freeway where I can see it is just around the corner to the right about 50 feet and have it tell me to turn left and when safe to make a uturn in the middle of the road to get to the business and then when I find a place after turning left a half mile down the road tell me I have reached my destination though I'm a 1/2 mi. away in the wrong direction.

Re: Stupid Nav.

Sorry to hear of your disappointment in the nav system

With well over 100,000 miles on two 2006 DTS's, I am pretty happy with mine.
I don't seem to have all the trouble that you do. (For which I am very grateful)

We travel a lot and it works pretty darn good...but I do not have a Garmin to compare it to, I have never needed one...yet.

Maybe the DTS and STS use a different map system or display system, but mine shows the NAMES on the POI's when I zoom in. If I am zoomed OUT... I have to touch each one to get the name.

I sometimes just push the OnStar button...tell the nice lady what I am looking for and she tells me how to get there.
Saves a lot of frustration.

Texas Jim

Re: Stupid Nav.

Maybe thats why GM's Nav is so crappy they want you to spend the extra money on the On Star.

I do agree with your Garmin comments. I just bought my 3rd Garmin (nuvi 855), and it is definitely more user friendly and capable than the in-dash STS nav. I had it in the trunk in case the STS had issues--it stayed in the trunk.

Re: Stupid Nav.

Since I'm thinking about buying a CTS, after seeing this thread, I started a thread on the CTS forum to try to see how they felt about the factory navigation system. As strongly as the STS people felt against it, most of the CTS people that strong for it. What gives?

I have wondered that also.
In the DTS forum, most people that have the nav...like it.
In the GM truck forum, that I am on, most people there like it.
I don't know what the deal is with the STS nav system...but several people here sure seem to dislike it... A LOT.

Re: Stupid Nav.

I too, wonder about this. I will grant that the STS Nav may be clumsy compared to many, but I really like ours now that I know how to use it. With a Lockpick, it does everything I need. In fact, on my recent vacation, it guided us to a mountain top that we would have missed.

It would be nice for map disks to be more current, cheaper, etc. but quibbling about $200 bucks on a car that listed for $39-66K is pointless.

Re: Stupid Nav.

The nav on my car blows too. It'll get you where you want to go but you'll probably go way out of the way. I've used it a few times where I knew where I was going and the route prescribed was 10 miles further than necessary. It wants you to get on the highway for every trip, even if you're just going down the street. Plus it's a huge pain to program. It really is a POS.

Re: Stupid Nav.

I just checked the GM NAV disc center and it says that I need;

“2009 NA CORV/GP/STS/9-5, North America.
The disc is currently back ordered, part number 25976806, $199.”

Since this has been on back order for as long as I can remember, does anyone actually have one and is it worth the wait?

The difference is they ARE different...The '08+ CTS nav has XM Nav Traffic as well as a few other things and IS great. I think the "08+ trucks do too, at least the Escalades do. The STS nav was designed in '04 for the '05+ models. And since the car is being discontinued no update is planned. The STS nav is not the worse one available in a Cadillac, the SRX and XLR nav's seem archaic to me. I don't know how good a Garmin was in 2004, but I would imagine it is not as good as it is now

Check a Corvette forum - they have the same NAV as the STS.

...just did a 10 minute check of the main vette forum - and couldn't find a single complaint thread. strange.
