I am going to hardwire my Escort 8500 X50. Does anyone know how to remove the front overhead console? Thanks!

Re: 8500 X50 Hardwire

I figured it out, but for future reference the front and rear overhead light consoles just pull down. they are held in place with metal clips. For wiring there are two options. 1. catch power off of the rear view mirror. The switched power in the mirror is the pink wire (pin #15) and the ground is the black wire. 2. You can tape into the dome light wires. The green with a white stripe is power and the ground is black. The dome light wires keep power for ten minutes after the car is shut off then regain power when a door is opened or the car is running.

Re: 8500 X50 Hardwire

I hate to wake up a sleeping bear but does anyone have any idea how much juice I can pull through that little pink wire? I'm assuming it powers everything up there but I need to have 2AMPS for an accessory that I'm mounting up there.

Thumbs up Re: 8500 X50 Hardwire

I did the same thing, with the same results, I used a Rocky Mountain
Radar /with a built in Scrambler the model 450 that talks, so you don't have
to take your eyes OFF the road, and it does power down after a while.
as far as the 2 amps , just do it, I don't think it will blow a fuse, and the
wiring is definitley big enough, the worst case is to put a larger fuse,
3 or 4 amp to compensate for your added option.
Oh Yeah , to mount the detector, I just used Suction cups, with silicone
to the windshield, let it dry, the wire goes out the front of the console,
cut a little hole in front, for the wire, NOT SEEN,Yes the sun shades will not go forward
and the detector hides behind the black out on the windshield, NOT SEEN, SO STEALTH.
LOw enough, for the Prism to pick up rear threats, RIght NEXT to the mirror, left side of course.
I powered mine OFF the dome lights, with ALL the things the mirror does, Leave them alone.

Is it mounted low enough on the glass to get a GPS signal?

I thought about hard wiring mine but, It needs a clear view of the sky to get a GPS signal so that it knows where it is to remember traps and blocked signals.

Re: 8500 X50 Hardwire

My Bel hides behind the visor when down but otherwise visible, just below the heavy window tint. The mirror provides switched power.

I first tried that location because the RADAR detector display reflection disabled the Intellibeam. Now I like it better!

What is the best way to get to the wires in the RV mirror without screwing it up? Thanks.

Re: 8500 X50 Hardwire

I used self-sealing telco wire taps, compress to lock. Tomm's site sells power taps that have tabs that insert into the OEM connector.
