Cadillac Forums: noise coming from steering column
I was wondering if someone here would be able to help me. I just bought a 2007 STS V6 AWD.
On Saturday, I all of the sudden started to hear a noise coming from the steering column. It sounds a little like paper crumbling (light sound) or a staticy (if that is a word) sound while driving.
Has anyone had this problem in the past or know where to direct me. I do have to take my car in for inspection (bought in different state), but I want to know how to tell the tech what it is and sound a little more intelligent than I did above in this post.
I've taken my 2006 STS 1SC to the dealer six times since last June with a squealing/squeaking sound that comes from the steering column after the car warms up...
This problem has been discussed on this forum before and search for "squeaking" and "steering" should call it up...
To date they haven't been able to fix it....unfortunately I have been forced to start the lemon law process...
I would not classify mine as a squeek, but I guess I will go back and listen again. Also, from the thread you sent me too, it appears that everone is having this problem when they are actually steering (turning) their cars, like Kalvin101 mentioned in his post. Mine is doing it when I am driving straight (holding steering wheel in one place). From what I can remember, when I turn the wheel, it stops.
Not sure this sounds like the same problem you have been having, but like I said, I will go back and listen again to see if I could call it a squeek instead of what I originally called it, which was paper crumble / staticy.
Maybe the same thing, maybe different....I just spoke to a friend of mine who owns an '07 STS V6 and they told me they've started to hear noises coming from the steering column also although not squealing/squeaking like mine....
could this be a possible defect with these parts in general?
It just started doing it turning both ways today! I thought it might be snow, but I looked and no snow packed in my wheel wells or anything.
I hope the parts aren't defective. I'd hate to give this car up because it keeps having problems!
My 05 does this to. More like a moaning noise and vibration. Funny thing is, though, it goes away when the a/c is turned off. Try this on yours and see if it goes away.

I had the moaning noise in my 05'. You are right in that it has to do with the a/c. The noise was coming from the passanger side in my car. I brought it to the dealer and described it like you did above as a "moaning noise". They knew exactly what it was and had it fixed within a couple hours.

What did they do to fix yours? I had mine at the dealer yesterday and they thought the power steering was binding so they realigned the sub frame. But, it still is not fixed. It happens when they A/C is on and the car is at a low idle of 600 rpm. When I turn the wheel, it's the load on the engine that makes it "moan". Turn the A/C off, and it all goes away.
