Re: Gas Gauge miles to empty - out of gas

You think a STS fuel gauge is bad, try guessing a Z28 gauge needle. The needle an inch past full, just means full, full is 3/4, half is a 1/4 and empty means your screwed.

Re: Gas Gauge miles to empty - out of gas

I have to admit that I have run a cts and a sts out of gas. Most newer cars give you about a 30-40 mile grace once the light comes on. NOT CADILLAC. If the light comes on u better be able to see the station.

Re: Gas Gauge miles to empty - out of gas

My Yamaha R6 has no fuel gage at all.
I have to use the trip odometer to keep track of when to fill up.
I usually go about 200 miles on the 4.4 gallons I think it holds.
It has a low fuel light but no reserve tank like my old FZR and my older FZ... which actually did have a fuel gage.
(I think)

I have never gone over 40 miles with the low fuel light on, probably not even that far.
I usually watch the trip odo and look for gas around 180 miles.
It gets close to 50 mpg regardless of how you drive it

Re: Gas Gauge miles to empty - out of gas

Every time I get a new car the first thing I do is fill the tank, and a 3 gallon container which I put in the trunk. Then I test the gas gauge vs mileage, when the gauge says empty I keep driving, noting the mileage, and see how far I can go befor running out of gas. Now I usually don't let the gas get that low but SH_T happens and I just want to know har far I can go. Good to the last drop!

Re: Gas Gauge miles to empty - out of gas

on my 06 sts6 i consistently ran the tank down to 1/4 tank or less for the first year or so...never had any issues....now i try to stay above a quarter of a tank...not for the car but just in case we decide to bomb iran or invade venezuela....i know, i know....i'm paranoid

So share the INFO! Keeping in mind each car will perform a little different, it'll give everyone else a general idea, then they just need to keep it on the conservative side. How far until your run out of gas after it says empty? How long after the light comes on? I think I would be too embarassed to run out of gas to try this. Especially in my V! But like you said, stuff happens. Too bad you don't have a V to try that out on and give me the info! haha

my 86 honda vfr700 has the same setup...it holds5.1gallons in total, with a 1.0 gallon reserve, which is when the light comes on....back when i commuted on the bike i got cute and left the tank switch on reserve and thought i would use the light as my only indicator for when it was time to refuel....bad move...luckily i was only a mile or so from a gas station on a secondary road when i discovered that was a stupid idea.

depending on my driving style/speed, i get any where from 43 mpg to nearly 60 mpg (no joke) on a steady ride on an interstate with keeping it at 60 mph...love that bike...

Re: Gas Gauge miles to empty - out of gas

I was surprised how much the digital readout was off. It said I had like 50 miles, but when I filled up, it took 16.4 gallons. I almost ran out. It should be a little more accurate.
