    Map Update

I received an email from Cadillac offering an update to the map in my navigation unit for my 2012 SRX. There's a $40 discount plus free shipping. Its $160. I do feel that outdated maps and POI's would be good, but wonder how much of an improvement I'll see with this update. I also wonder if I can install this update myself. It seems to indicate on the site that I can. Can I get some feedback on map updates from SRX with Nav owners?
    Thanks.

I got this offer as well, and I would love to know if it's a full update/upgrade or only the POI's and addresses?

    Full upgrade meaning different interface...

I'm pretty sure it's POI and road based only. I wasn't aware of, nor have I heard of any changes to the interface. To those who say the phone or portable is a better or cheaper solution, it's also very different having the NAV built in, means it works more efficiently with the car and systems. XM weather and traffic are nice to have. You can send destinations to the car from computer, phone, or tablet. I like that feature, although it seems to be hit and miss at times. I didn't opt for the NAV, but I do like having it. I don't use it that much. Updated maps would be nice, but I wonder how current they are.

The few times I really NEEDED the Nav, the destinations often were not available so I ended up having to use my phone. The ONLY way you can send to the Nav from a computer is if you're PAYING for OnStar's Directions and Connections. The Safe and Sound plan doesn't offer this feature. I used it so little that I couldn't justify the additional cost. I suppose I hate being nickel and dimed to death and have become more miserly as I have aged.

I'll take Google Maps for free any day over the Caddy rip-off DVD pricing.

I maybe tempted to purchase a current DVD navigation upgrade, where did the offer come from?? I presume the DVD is a drop in the cd player and it just overrides the version installed, or am I wrong in my thinking??

No, you are correct. The DVD for the Nav upgrade is written to the hard drive. After the upgrade the Nav upgrade DVD can be put away in a safe place.

The offer is from Cadillac. The website indicates that you can install it yourself in a short amount of time. I'm still on the fence, but leaning towards getting it. Just wish I knew how current it is. The details show how many different POI changes there are in each category. Some went up, some down, and some were nearly the same.

The email I have says that the offer expires on 12/6. I'm not sure if you can get that without an invitation, but it can't hurt to ask.

    Re: Map Update

Here's how I feel about the map update. If your car is 1-2 years old and you don't regularly find road inaccuracies, don't waste your money. Don't ever expect much from a DVD based POI database. These will never be current for very long, as businesses are constantly closing, moving, etc. As I've said before, this disc is outdated the moment it's burned. There are new roads being built every single day. Buying a new disc will only give you a map database that's less outdated than the previous one, but still outdated. An Internet based GPS with constant updates (e.g. Google Maps) is the way to go. There are cars already on the market using this now.

Having said all of that, nothing beats the convenience of having a built-in Nav system. The humongous 8" display that automatically switches from day to night, voice commands that mute the stereo and being able to input GPS coordinates all make the built-in GPS a pleasure to use. Not to mention not having to prop your phone up on some makeshift mount or affixing it to the windshield (which is illegal in some states).

If you're driving a 2010 and you live in an area that's undergone massive road construction in the last few years, you may want to consider a map update. I've found myself in this exact same situation. I recently relocated to another state. I was following a road that suddenly disappeared, according to my SRX's GPS. I'm giving this update some serious consideration. Is it overpriced? Absolutely. Is it as accurate as Google Maps? Never. Will I rely on this for POIs? Of course not. Will using it be convenient. Hell yeah!

The key to remember is whenever using any GPS, know and understand its limitations and ALWAYS have a back-up GPS with regularly updated information.

I was thinking similarly. My maps on the 2012 vs. this update will probably not be much different. For me, it's having the latest and all that. It's like the nav traffic. I barely use it, but don't like the idea of having a feature on the car that doesn't work. I did use the traffic and re-routing one Thanksgiving to get around a mess north of Philadelphia and it was nice to have. I'm leaning towards not getting this update, but may consider the next one if I still have the same vehicle.
Thanks for your feedback and good to see you Sube.

OK, so the way I understand it ............ say I have more than one GM vehicle with the same nav system, can I use the one DVD to update both vehicles??
