    Question Engine Oil Issue

On Sunday, the check engine light illuminated on my 2010 SRX (47k). According to Onstar, the code came back as "Engine control module not operating as expected." Had the dealer come pick it up on Monday, they cleared the code by updating the software but when they drove the car the light illuminated again. They said they would need it a couple more days to diagnose the problem. Now it's Thursday and they say that they have it ready to go and that the issue was caused by the vehicle being a quart low on oil. The dealer stated that this issue was NORMAL! I am just wondering if anyone else has had this issue? The oil was changed at this dealer approximately one month ago with the suggested synthetic blend. If this is in fact normal for this vehicle, why would a low oil problem return a code suggesting an issue with the engine control module? Also, if this was normal why did they need three days to diagnose it?

This does not seem to make sense. Being 'down a quart' should not set off the check engine light. If the oil was dangerously low, your DIC would give you this message.

The fact that your dealer would say this is normal would send me a red flag. Not sure how many miles you put on in the last month, but my SRX might be down a quart after about 1500 or so. Hopefully you were covered under warranty. The engine module problem must have had another cause. Regardless, it always pays to check your oil at least every few fillups.

Hope your problem is permanently fixed! Good luck.

    Re: Engine Oil Issue

Thanks for the reply. I actually took the vehicle on a road trip soon after the last oil change, so it has just under 3k on that oil. It is reassuring to know that the oil issue may be normal since it seems to happen with your SRX as well. As for the engine module, I am hoping it just needed a software upgrade and they happened to notice the low oil. I know now to keep a close watch on it. And yes, thankfully I was covered under warranty.

    Hello tristan782,

I see retcad was able to offer insight on the situation, because they also experienced low oil. I hope your issue is fixed as well. If there are ever other questions or concerns, don' hesitate to reach out to us via private message.
