you should also have been checking the oil level with the dipstick at regular intervals as the owners manual also states

i doubt you would get a warranty denied though if you had always done your oil changes on time and its documented

lots of people with the 1st gen CTS and SRX got warranty work done due to low engine oil situations
there was also warranty extensions and special coverage rebates that paid you back you if you had paid for a repair out of warranty before the extension was enacted

It is definitely true in the first generation SRXs. We have A 2008 that uses oil. Also, it is a frequent topic of conversation on the first generation boards. Our 2011 has the 3.0 engine and doesn't use much oil. Are you saying they haven't fixed the oil consumption/timing chain issues yet?

The consumption issue had to so with break in - something that is out of any manufacturer's hands.

Most people don't notice it because they change their oil every 3000 miles

    yes it is

i should also add that compounding any break-in consumption issue there have been PCV oil vapor ingestion issues on various engines
DI engines are most affected by PCV oil vapor since the intake does not get 'washed' with fuel (but that's a whole other thread - and there are many already)

    Re: 2012 3.6l oil requirements

    Chris.....

Would a catch can provide some protection for the oil vapor ingestion on the DI engines?

I have one other GM car that has DI and, if it works, would install one. On another vehicle which does not have DI, I did install a catch can because I tend to "push" it a little harder.

Sorry, I just found the PM link. I should have sent my question to you with that link......keeping this thread "clean".

    Re: 2012 3.6l oil requirements

no worries ... the catch can is an aftermarket item that can help with oil vapor ingestion ... many cans don't do that good of a job ... SC1250 (vendor RX on the forum here) sells probably the best one available at the best price ... i would recommend theirs before all others

I've been relying on onstar diagnosis to tell me about oil life, can they be trusted?

They are simply relaying the information the vehicle info center provides to them. You can access it via the button on your turn signal.

That system will not provide any information on your oil level potentially being low. That is what the dipstick is for and maybe the message that says oil level low, but Chris is saying the SRX may not have that feature.

That's the same info ... onstar just pulls it from your car ... you can view it any time you want by scrolling through the DIC info display

    Re: 2012 3.6l oil requirements

I don't wish to start an "oil war" but IMO I would suggest changing the first oil change before the suggested schedule. I'm basing my opinion on 3 different SRX cars (two 2011's and my 2012) that had an oil analysis done.

I can provide some details by PM AND documentation, if anyone is interested.

Don't wish to confuse the issue and start a "war". You know everyone has an opinion, and the thread could go off in another direction.
