Check your oil levels frequently. The 3.6 like to use up oil. And if you go by the OLM and don't pay attention until 12k miles later, then well you might be down 2-3 qts of oil.

I know the CTS-V had an oil level monitor not sure if the 3.6's got that feature as well?

ALL GM vehicles have an OLM - Oil Life Monitoring system. One should check their oil level at every gas fill up and of course very few of us will actually do that. I don't know where you would get that the 3.6L likes to use up oil? I certainly have not heard much talk about using excessive oil on that engine.

Zinner was asking if the SRX has a low oil level light. I don't know if it does or not. Guess that is my project for the day to find out. My Avalanche and Grand Prix do. The 5.3 in the Avy drinks a little. The ol' Grand Prix leaks a little

    Re: 2012 3.6l oil requirements

Page 5-35 of my 2012 manual says "ENGINE OIL LOW — ADD OIL
    This message displays when the
engine oil level is too low. Check
    the oil level."

So unless you are extremely worried about it, you can trust the system to let you know if you are low.

I can't find an oil level sensor/switch in the parts catalog

the owner's manual has been wrong in the past on various features etc that I wouldn't trust it

Thanks Chris, I checked mine before the oil change at about 5,500 miles and was full, so hopefully I don't have to worry about using oil for a long while.

Hopefully we can learn from someone for sure if there is or is not an oil level sensor.

Thanks for the heads up... I wasn't aware that there may be some 3.6L engines that could be using a little more oil than normal.

    Re: 2012 3.6l oil requirements

Yeah, those that consumed some oil along with the extended oil change intervals (due to using better oil and more efficient engines) compounded by owners who never check the dipstick ended up causing a lot of problems with timing chains, tensioners, guides, bent valves and even a few blown motors

    Re: 2012 3.6l oil requirements

Well 20 posts later including a GM Rep?, a parts mgr. and my original post is still not answered. What changed? Why is GM using a blend and not a Mobil1 requirement on their new 3.6? FWIW my VT dealer is charging the difference if Mobil1 is requested. Anybody?
Also mr Rippy my SRX has had Mobil1 changes when needed and it is definitely an oil user at 126k miles.

When I was at the Cadillac dealer today I asked the service guys if there was a low oil warning/ indicator light on the SRXs. He said there was no oil light indicators to warn the driver if s/he's oil level was low.

Any engine can 'consume' oil if not properly broken in. With the LY7 it seemed to be more common than most.
    C&C and C&C like this.

Shell is the largest oil company in the world.

Also mr Rippy my SRX has had Mobil1 changes when needed and it is definitely an oil user at 126k miles.
GM Dextros synthetic oil blend is a much better blend than just standard oil. The reason why GM dealers charge more for the Mobil 1 is because it is more expensive than using GM's own Dextros oil. If a customer wants to spend the extra $$ for Mobil 1 then they have that option. As far as I am concerned GM warranties their engines for 100,000 with the blessing of their brand of oil so I am not worried. BTW: I do like Mobil 1 and I have used it in my 2004 SSR from day one!

*Below is more information from GM's Dextros oil website.

General Motors is committed to designing, building, and selling cars that perform well and last a long time – and to making the experience of owning a GM vehicle highly rewarding. GM is also working to make its vehicles more fuel efficient and emit fewer pollutants. A critical component of performance, longevity, and environmental sensitivity is the quality of the oil that goes into the car. The right oil will help your engine run well for a longer time; substandard oil could cause your engine to run poorly and may even damage it. Yet, in today’s market it’s not always possible to determine the quality of the oil you buy.

That’s why GM Powertrain engineers developed the dexos™ engine oil specification. The result is engine oil designed specifically for your GM engine, with added performance in areas important to its operation. dexos™ represents a high quality, robust oil formulated to some of the most rigorous specifications in the industry. And just like GM, dexos™ is global. GM wants to make sure that every GM car anywhere in the world has access to the highest quality oil formulated exclusively for GM engines.

dexos™ is designed to increase fuel efficiency, extend the life of your emissions system, require fewer oil changes, and produce fewer emissions. You save time and money, and your car performs the way it was designed to.

dexos™ is the best oil for any GM car. It’s that simple.

To ensure you are using the recommended oil for your GM car, choose authentic, licensed dexos™ oils. dexos™ is an exclusive trademark of General Motors. Only those oils displaying the green or blue dexos™ trademark and icon on the front label have been certified and licensed by GM as meeting the demanding performance requirements and stringent quality standards of the dexos™ specification. Other oils may make claims but have not gone through GM’s rigorous testing and quality control process.

This begs the question: If one was to have engine failure related to low oil level, would GM say it was the owners fault for not checking the oil level? One could argue according to the manual, the car should have notified me of being low.
