Engine Block Heater - Dealer Install

    Hey Guys,

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2013 SRX. I live in the Chicago area -- just moved here actually. Should I get a engine block heater installed? I've heard the winters here can be quite brutal. I'll be parking the car indoors but I'm wonder about whether it might be useful when I park it outdoors on trips or whatever.

If you do think I should get it installed (it's $100 btw) can I ask the dealer to do this after I purchase the vehicle? Is it an easy install?

    Thanks in advance!

Re: Engine Block Heater - Dealer Install

I have lived in the Detroit area, cliamatogically similar to Chicago, for nearly seventy years and have never run into anyone using an engine-block heater. During the third week in January, it usually gets below zero cold but nearly everything runs. If you are traveling to northern Minnesota on a very regular basis you might want to consider the engine-block heater.

Next to running out of oil altogether the hardest thing on an internal combustion engine is a cold start. To relieve this problem, reduce the time for the car interior to get warm, and reduce gasoline usage while the engine warms up people around here start plugging in engine block heaters between 30F and 40F degrees. The factory Cadillac engine block heater incorporates a thermostat that automatically turns on the heater when the temp drops to 40F.

    Binky Bear is correct ...

However, I live in WNY area and we are known to have some pretty cold weather as well. I have never had or really thought that I would need an engine block heater - although we have had some cold stretches that were below ZERO here for sure. I have always thought that if I lived up in Minnesota or Alaska where the temperature is sub ZERO a lot of the time is where it would be a great option to have. I wouldn't expect Chicago weather to be any more severe then here where you would really need to have one.

That being said, one of the best ways to find out is ask your friends, neighbors and or co-workers who live in that area and ask them what they have. I would hazard to guess about 99% of them would say they don't have an Engine Block Heater.

All new block heaters installed in cars from the factory, or aftermarket, in Canada since '08 have a thermometer on them and don't even start/activate unless the temperature drops below -18*C (0*F).
