How to make sure the IP unit has accurate millage? Buying a used IP from Junk Yard.
My wife was cleaning her car and used Goo-Gone to wipe down her plastic on her IP unit to get off a gummy substance and the plastic is all fogged up now, the dealer of course will not cover it. I found one at a junk yard for $100 bucks but she only has 14,000 miles on her car. The junk yard is telling me the IP unit stores the miles in it and not the cars computer. How to I put this used IP unit in her car and have the miles be the actual 14K and not what’s on the used IP unit. I always thought the cars computer held the miles and when I plug in the used IP unit it will go to what the computer says. Who is right here?

Your GM dealership service department should be able to do this recalibration. When the instrument panel in my wife's Buick was replaced, they hooked up their scan tool and got the mileage reset on the new cluster.
Just curious however. Unless they have changed the way clusters are assembled, I thought the plastic cover should separate from the cluster. You should be able to just swap out the cover I think.
