    iPod playlist song sequence

When I plug in an iPod and attempt to play a playlist, the nav unit resequences the playlist alphabetically by song name. Is there a way to play the sequence in its original order?

    Re: iPod playlist song sequence

yeah, this sucks.....my wife just bought me the 160GB Classic so i can have virtually my entire music collection at my disposal, and then i find out it plays it back alphabetically whether i play by album or even playlist.

if i wanted random song playing, i could have bought an iPod Shuffle!!!

even more annoyingly, much of my music is live music/recorded concerts. this is bad enough on a studio album, but when it's a live show and it's jumping all over, and songs may typically have segues into each other (think the Grateful Dead/Phish/Widespread Panic), it completely destroys the mood of the show.

for me, this is basically a dealbreaker on using the iPod. if anyone makes me a great deal on a brand new 160GB Classic in silver, make yourself known......

    Re: iPod playlist song sequence

    kbrooks---

i have a few other comments and thoughts.

first off, i went browsing through all the iPod-related posts in all cadillac forums; virtually everyone is only exceedingly compimentary to the system, and several people have said that Apple designed the system with GM to make the best iPod-ready stereo of all manfacturers. since you and i are seeing what seems like the most basic of mistakes, there seems to be something amiss........first off, how come no one else is mentioning this? and second, there is no way Apple would have let this slip through the design cracks if they did indeed work with GM. so i just have this uneasy feeling that somehow, we're missing something.

and i had an idea in terms of a workaround. assuming you're using iTunes to control your iPod, i wonder if there's a way to make a smart playlist or something so that when the music is loaded into the iPod, it uses the basic ID3 tags rather than the song titles. so basically, if we had album names but the songs were labled as "Track 1, Track 2, etc.", it should then play in the correct order. the downside is that we would miss our song titles in the display, but i for one would give that up in a heartbeat to play the albums correctly.

do you follow my line of thinking? if you have any ideas on any of these thoughts, please pass them along. and i'm going to muck around in iTunes to see if there's any way to load up an iPod in the way that i describe. although i probably can't without removing every track name in my library, and that AIN'T gonna happen. it took me a looong time to get all 12,500 tracks that i have all prettied up.

I know it defeats the purpose of having an iPod connected so that you can control it via the radio, but if you're desperate for song order, you could always use the Aux In and control your music from the iPod itself.

through the 1/8" jack? sure, i guess i can, but--

--as you said, we lose the functionality through the screen (eyes forward, people!)
--then i also don't have a charging iPod, which sucks to have to worry about.

as i mentioned, this was a gift, and i was supposed to just chuck it in the console and never see it again, just let it do it's thing. my biggest surprise is still that many people are using their iPods (gatherred by searching these forums), but this is the only thread running this issue? is everyone else that "out of tune" with their music that they don't even realize it's randomly playing at all times?

    Re: iPod playlist song sequence

alright, hold all the horses here---

i tried calling Cadillac cust. service; that got me nowhere and was a fairly awful experience.

BUT, i grabbed a different iPod (Touch, 2nd gen.), plugged it into the USB, and..............everything worked normally. all albums and playlists played in their proper order.

so now i have to figure out if it's the iPods themselves that are making the difference, or the way the music was loaded onto the iPods in the first place. the one that i'm having trouble with is the brand-new 7th gen. classic----maybe the hardware reads differently?

and, fwiw i tried the AUX method with a 1/8" cable. it worked as expected, but not only did i lose nav screen controls and it won't charge, but more importantly, the sound was pretty muted and miserable. i had the 1/8" cable and the USB plugged in at the same time and even jumped back and forth between selecting USB or AUX while playing the same song, and the difference was light years apart. no one should listen to their music through the AUX if they can help it, based on that.

i'll repost when i've figured this out, and i will figure it out. kbrooks and 2010sled, if you're still reading this, it would help me to know which iPods you are using so i can troubleshoot this better. and i'll give you a fix in return!

also, my apologies to all those who i slammed earlier by wondering why they weren't noticing that their songs were playing alphabetically---looks like most people aren't having our issue.

from memory i seem to recall a bulletin that mentioned that certain ipods don't work with the system.

i wouldn't be surprised if a little Shuffle or some old models didn't work.....Cadillac didn't mention a bulletin. since the Classic is the most "basic" iPod that exists now, i couldn't imagine it not working (correctly).

i'm still guessing that it relates to the way the music is loaded onto the iPod, but haven't worked on it yet.

found the bulletin - i can email it to you if you' like - it does say the classic is supported though

maybe have a dealer try and reprogram the MPIM (multimedia player input module)

    definitely something not right

    Re: iPod playlist song sequence

alright, i have the (hopefully) final word on what's going on.

i spoke with Apple who booted me right up to a second tier specialist. he understod completely what i was saying and the troubleshooting that i did with 4 iPods (as opposed to Cadillac, which was an awful phone call). anyway, he did some research and found a GM bulletin that this is a known issue since Sept. 2009; several people calling about the same problem.

he said that when the system was designed, it was specifically designed more to the Touch Apple products, i.e. the iPhone and iPod Touch (and perhaps the new nano?). they are known to play as they should, by track number or programmed playlist order. all click/scroll wheel iPods instead default to an alphabetical order, despite what they are showing on their own screens (and despite their built-in programming to default to track order when "unsure" how to play). he said that since the issue has been known for over a year and GM has not indicated they they were going to produce a fix for it, he doubted that they would. and he was unsure if it was even fixable through a software update, or a firmware update.

so, this seems to be from the mouth of those who know, although it's pretty sad that Apple had to find this though a portal into GM's website. with this being the answer, i returned my 160G Classic and 32G Touch that i was just gifted and exchanged them for a 64G Touch. i sure will miss the idea of having ALL of my music with me, but i guess half of my music isn't too bad.

so, unless someone out there swears that they have a touch-wheel iPod that plays by track order through the USB port rather than alphabetically, this seems to close the issue, though not with a happy ending.

A few more reasons why this will be my last Cadillac purchase.

I would have probably bought an Infiniti this time except I don't care for the body styles of their crossovers (FX and EX). I looked at the Acura MDX as well but the simulated wood made it look cheap to me.

Well then, you should get a Cadillac with the real Sapele Pommele wood trim!
