DIC - A Plethora of Messages

Most people know of the typical messages displayed by the DIC (Driver Information Center). However, few people know there are tons of additional warning messages displayed under certain conditions. For example, did you know the DIC displays messages to warn you of low levels of brake fluid, engine coolant and oil? Most vehicles warn you if the oil "pressure" is low, but not the oil "level". It will also warn you of an attempted vehicle theft, turn signal bulb failure, loose gas cap and a low battery in the remote. I thought it would be informative (especially to new owners) to have all of these listed in one place. Below is the complete list, as noted on page 4-30 of the manual.

    Apply Brakes Before Cruise

    If this message displays when
    attempting to activate cruise control,
apply the brake and then try again.

Still scratching my head on this one.

Darn, I got really hopeful. The only feature that I really miss from my BMW was the light icon that told me an exterior lightbulb was burnt out. It would light for headlights, turn signals, and even license plate bulbs. Even if a rear brake light went out, there was an additional backup bulb for "emergency stop" that would light in its place.

Speaking of that, the emergency stop lights were nice too. If the ABS engaged, a second set of brake lights would come on to warn people behind you of heavy braking.

Those two features I really miss. I was hopeful that one of the messages would be "Replace exterior bulb"

You should return to BMW. Sounds like you really liked it better.

Interesting. I'm 100% certain I never would have noticed this. And if I did notice 'extra bright' lights, I wouldn't have associated it with heavy braking.

Now see, i really hate these feature's, because when changing bulbs out to LED, they draw less current and kick off the bulb out indicators. Which then requires some light hacking on the wiring for resistors to bring the current draw back up to turn the bulb out warning indicator off!
