Being from the Northeast also, it's the first thing I looked up when I took delivery in December. Here is the extract from the manual (page 8-27) to answer your question: Best of luck with the storm, Connecticut was lucky this time, it just missed us to the south.

With this feature, engine power is
always sent to all four wheels. It is
fully automatic, and adjusts itself as
needed for road conditions.
No problem. I'm just happy GM Cadillac replaced the struts with the new revised struts the other day! It's like I'm driving a new vehicle over again without the thumping noise coming from the defective struts.
There's a nice video here that shows you in more detail exactly how the AWD system works. Basically, the system is constantly shifting the percentage of torque from front to rear and vice versa, as well as from left to right on the same axle. The latter making it safer taking curves in the rain. I always tell people AWD is not just for better handling in the snow.

AWD = All wheels, all the time (except in circumstances where the manufacturerer made "tag along" AWD. ie: FWD except when slipping) Computer controlled (except for driver controlled torque transfer systems)
