    Newbie:: Thoughts and a question

    So my wife and I spent the better part of today car-shopping in the rain. After looking closely at a wide range of cars from (preowned) ML350 and X5, and new Equinox, RDX/MDX, SRX, and MKX, I think the SRX is right for us.

    We love the styling, road feel, construction, and features. The panoramic roof is killer, and our kids don't get carsick in the back seat. Although I guess it's a small point, I like the fact that the SRX will drink regular unleaded gas versus premium. We tend to keep cars for 10+ years so that extra cost adds up. I also like having a lower-cost service option (e.g. take it in to Chevy versus the MBenz doesn't have another option other than an independent wrench).

    I'm leaning towards the luxry trim pkg with the nav/stereo upgrade. Question for the nav owners:

    My Acura TL allowed me (or the passenger) to work the nav (search addresses etc...) while the car was moving. The Lexus shuts down most of the nav features. Looks like the SRX disables many features as well while the car is moving. True? Is that a pain when your passenger wants to search for an ATM, food, etc...?

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Yes, it's true that "most" of the Nav features are disabled while the vehicle is going faster than about 3 MPH. I wish that they would allow Nav functions
    when there is a passenger in the vehicle, as it knows if someone is seating in the seat for the airbag...

    It only limits "manual" input to the system. Don't forget about voice commands. For example, you can say, "Navigation/Show Gas" and gas station icons will pop up on the map. You can say Show/Hide/Gas, ATMs, Shopping, Airports, etc. and they'll either display or disappear. If you program "voice tags" for specific locations, you can say, "Navigation/Go To/Dad's House". You can change the display from Day/Night/Auto using voice commands also. There are other voice commands. I just mentioned a few.

    Also if you have the OnStar Directions and Connections plan, you can call and have your directions downloaded into your system. I have used that FAR more than I thought I would.

    I have also used the Mapquest download into my system. Very cool indeed.
