Automatic volume control

Anyone know the exact operation of A.V.C. ? I have it on and I only hear it work when volume is set real low.

I thought it was possibly incorporated with the position of the windows ( I noticed it once with window fully open) but yesterday it began working with all windows up, driving through a parking lot the volume was set real low.

I seems to always be adjusting the volume when I have it turned up alittle. Lowering it at stop lights and raising it in motion. It's exact supposed function.

Re: Automatic volume control

Yep, it doesn't seem to work at all on my '08, With my Corvette and Mercedes you can hear both those radios kick up volume when speed increases. I literally cannot detect any change in the SRX as speed increases, and I have it set on max. I assume it just is supposed to work when speed increases, not window settings, etc. But I figured it was just broken.
I'll try it at super low volume and see if I can detect any change. Maybe they think Caddy owners should only listen to elevator music at very low levels.
Of course, the truth is, the avg Caddy owner is 78, and almost deaf.

Anyone else have similar issues?

P.S. I wonder what the avg SRX owner age is: I mostly see women in 40's driving them.

Re: Automatic volume control

haha, I am really messing with the avg demographics then, I'm only 28, male and I'm driving one. Although, I had to have the sport package and black paint to make it a little more sporty & manly!!

Text below taken from the 2008 SRX with Nav Manual:
Bose AudioPilot®
AudioPilot®: Your vehicle has the Bose® sound
system, it includes Bose AudioPilot® noise
compensation technology.
To use AudioPilot®:
1. Press the MENU key to enter the menu screen,
then press the MENU key repeatedly until Radio
is selected or touch the Radio screen button.
2. Press the > Automatic Volume Control screen
button to access the AudioPilot® menu.
3. Press the ON screen button.
When on, AudioPilot® continuously adjusts the audio
system equalization, to compensate for background
noise, so that your music always sounds the same at
the set volume level.
This feature is most effective at lower volume settings
where background noise can affect how well you
hear the music being played through your vehicle’s
audio system. At higher volume settings, where
the music is much louder than the background noise,
there may be little or no adjustments by AudioPilot®.
To turn it off, touch the OFF screen button.
For more information on AudioPilot®, visit
www.bose.com/audiopilot.

Hope this helps,
Ed

Re: Automatic volume control

Well that is almost as annoying as the auto locks. If I have the volume low there is a reason, I don't need to hear it. If it is loud and I roll the windows down make it louder. Typical GM engineering thoughtfullness.

Re: Automatic volume control

This feature is not activated by how fast you are driving or if you have a window down or up.

It's purpose is to maintain the percieved volume level that you have selected above the ambient noise in the cabin.

If you have the radio set to play softly in the background the total compensation will only rise enough so that you still hear the radio playing softly in the background, not drowned out by the increase in cabin noise.

Re: Automatic volume control

Yeah, but the above instruction states only at low level.

Besides, every car I have been in, the cabin gets noisier the faster you go.

Re: Automatic volume control

Very annoying, I just disable it. I can use the Steering Wheel volume button to adjust.

Re: Automatic volume control

I think the instructions state most effective at lower volume settings.

True, the faster you go, the cabin gets noisier.
You roll down a window, the cabin gets noisier.
Open the sun roof, the cabin gets noisier.

The feature is only to keep the volume level above the ambient noise.

If you have the radio turned up to a high volume it will be above the ambient noise with needing volume compensation.

Re: Automatic volume control

Ah-Ha. So it doesn't really do anything for volume, just tweaks the treble and bass equalizer a hair at lo volume settings. I have the non-nav system, and it is accessed via the right-hand button; then you get 3 settings for audio volume compensation. But none of them work like my Vette or Benz, where you can actually hear the volume increase as the speed increases (and the road noise goes up). The old Benz actually steps up at 20, 40, 60 MPH. But it's 20 years old, and that tactic works fine.
So, I guess my SRX is working as "intended" and I'll just continue to hit the wheel button as speed changes (poor engineering I think).
