2005 SRX V8 Stranded During Flood

I was driving my 2005 V8 SRX to work this morning in an area that got flooding rains last night (Long Island, NY) and went through a few high water areas successfully. I tried to cross a flooded depression in the highway and the car stalled in the middle. The water was up to about the bottom of the doors. I was able to restart the car but, while hurrying to get out of the water, built up a wave in front of me that caused the car to stall again. I finally pushed it up out of the water with the help of a good samaritan.

I tried to restart it once it was out of the water but it wouldn't start. I called my service station on my cellphone and told them what happened. They said I probably got water in my intake valve and not to try to start it anymore. It's now on the side of the highway and I'll have it towed to my mechanic later today.

Anyone have any idea of the kind of problem I'm facing?

Water may have entered the airbox from underneath. Remove air filter to check. If so, you may have ingested water and may need to remove water from cylinders if it got that far. It may have just fouled the MAF (most likely).

You could have easily damaged your motor. I wish the best for you.

The repair shop has said I got too much water into the engine and it's "totaled." I have comprehensive insurance on it so now I have to see what they appraise it for.

Kelley Blue Book values the car at:

    In “Good” condition:
    Trade-In value: $3,305
    Private Sale Value: $4,831

    In “Very Good” condition:
    Trade-In value: $3,691
    Private Sale Value: $5,049

What do auto insurers base their valuations on?

they use their own formula, for the most I've seen they pay the higher number simply because they evaluate the car higher to cover everything.

Driving through water can destroy many things on a vehicle including hot items like brakes, hub bearings, reduce exhaust life etc, not to mention all the electrical connections and wires! NEVER NEVER NEVER drive through standing water!!!

I wish more people would pay attention to this.

If you want to drive through standing water get a properly snorkeled military style hummer or jeep. Otherwise stay out of it.
