2004 SRX cabin air filter question

Does the cabin air filter work all the time or do I need to push the recirculate button? I would think the recirculate button wouldn't let air in from the outside. If this is true and I push the recirculate button does that mean the cabin air filter isn't being used? If anyone can answer this question I'd appreciate it.

You have it figured out. The filter, a b@#ch to change, lays up against the firewall through which heated air and conditioned air passes. My understanding is when the recirculate is on, the inside cabin air is being cycled. Not 100% of course, but useful in tunnels, behind old Mercedes diesels like mine etc.

That sounds goofy. Meant the outside air before it gets heated etc.
